Why can I not reboot my computer

Here is my problem when click the start button and hit reboot the fans come on and the lights light up. Flopy and CD drive light comes on for a sec but no vidieo. I put a different vidieo card in and the same thing. It also does the same thing when I hit the rest button. Thanks

Is this a new problem or has the computer been that way since you got it?

Take a look at Event Viewer to see if there are any clues.

Check the Power Management applet in Control panel for clues. Be sure APM is anabled, if available.

Any other information you can provide would be useful, like when the problem started, what you have done so far to solve it, whether any new drivers or software were installed, etc.

I have an Asus motherboard which did the same thing by the sound of it. I have set up identical systems and it is the only one that does it. If it is an Asus motherboard then I think the possibilities are very high that the the problem is there.

I finally upgraded the BIOS (which is not something to take lightly) and it seems to be rebooting normally (it's at my daughters, so I can't check it).

If you wish to upgrade your BIOS, find and follow the instructions carefully.

See if anyone has another solution first. (Abraxas has questions for you in the XP forum)

PS Running two threads makes it hard to follow the answers. If you think another forum could help, you could request the moderators to change it. (Edit: I think the WindowsBBS can run a thread in two forums at the same time.)

Is the board by any chance an Asus P4PE? I have one and have never experienced this but I know there was a cold boot issue with some of these boards with earlier bios versions. The symptoms were as you describe yours to be (if I'm understanding you correctly). After the computer has been off for a while, on the first boot it hangs right at the beginning. Restart it and it boots normally. With this issue, once windows was started, the computer would do restarts just fine until the next time the computer was turned off and left off for a while. Then the same thing would happen. If this is the same thing, updating the bios more than likely will take care of your problem.

I can't tell you if what's happening with your board would be helped with a bios update or not. It may be that it would but I would wait and see if anybody else can come up with something. Bios updates are always my last resort. Some of those that had this problem with the Asus boards reported that it happened right out of the box. Others would say it started anywhere from within the first week they had it, to several months after they purchased it.

Sorry for the late responces I have had a lot going on and Thanks pete for mergeing the threads I was not sure where to put it. I was not sure if the problem is software or hardware. I did remember that this happened while over clocking my vidieo card but never went over any settings that I have already used before. Someone else told me it probable was the motherboard so I am thinking of replaceing it. Like I said I tried another video card and the same thing happened.

Does it anoy you? I lived with it for ages and got used to it. Hopefully, reboots aren't that fequently required.

If you think another motherboard might be the way to go, why not take a chance on upgrading the BIOS. It will take a little research, but if you are interested in setting up your own hardware then it will probably be necessary at some stage. Good experience.
