    Prblem using drivie short-cu

I am getting an error message when I attempt to launch Windows Explorer by right clicking a short-cut of drive(partition) and choosing Explorer in the displayed context menu. The error message as follows:

Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close.

This same error message is returned when I select Open or most of others in the context menu.
    Please help.

I think that your problems are more then likely being caused by missing files within explorer, but as the message is not giving much information, i would recommend running the repair wizard from the win xp CD.

How about reinstalling IE6 instead of repair installation of WXP?

The shortcuts to drives in XP should function like hard links and open just as the drive does.

Check the association of .lnk in Folder Options and restore it to default if it has changed.

Or, you can just make a hard link to the drive yourself. NTFS has a good hard link function---if your Program Files folder became too large for the drive that it was on, for example, you could just move the entire folder to another drive and form a hard link within your root directory to the new location. The Program Files folder on your original drive then appears just as it did before to XP, but it is really located on another drive.

Forming these links gives your drive shortcuts all the characteristics of a folder.

Try this linker called "junction ":

    http://www.sysinternals.com/files/junction.zip

    This is a command-line tool.

To form a link to the S: drive on your desktop, for example, the syntax would be:

    junction C:\Docume~1\<username>\Desktop\Sdrive S:\

This will create a folder on your desktop that is really the S: drive.

Deleting them is just as easy:

    junction -d C:\Docume~1\<username>\Desktop\Sdrive

I have managed to resolve the problem before my having a chance to see your post. I found that one of the three account in the system does not have this problem, so I copied the profile of that account to my profile and restored my personal setting manually.

I am very interested in you post and will save it for my future reference. Thank you very much for your response.
