Hi guys, the forum looks great - hope you can help.

Bought a Dell a few weeks ago and started having problems (possibly after installing a tablet driver I have since removed).

Have tried repairing XP, which seemed to complete on the second time of asking.

Current position is on booting up a number of things may happen :

    1. It boots normally - 20% of time if I'm lucky
    2. It hangs on the 'Windows is starting up' screen
    3. It hangs on the User Account screen - after it shows the pictures, but before it shows the number of unread e-mail messages

Once I do log-on I've had various problems, including a message about 'System Shutdown - initiated by NT Authority / System due to Remote procedure Call (RPC) service terminated unexpectedly'

When I did get into an account I had big problems closing down, or switching users - that usually caused a hang. Whether that's still a problem I'll test shortly - but I suspect the answer is yes.

I also had problems in Outlook - 'Procedure entry point GetIUMS could not be located in the dynamic link library MSDART.DLL' , but that may have goen away now I've caught up with all the automatic Windows update patches.

Currnetly running on 256Mb - with another 1Gb on order. Is 256Mb an issue here ?

I have Norton running. It claimed to have found some a Blaster worm - but I'm not sure if I believe it (file TFTP2676 and TFTP3972 ?)

    All help gratefully received.

Hi XP Newbie - Welcome to the Board :)

Sounds like you have the Blaster Worm as indicated by Norton. Log onto their web site and download the removal tool.

I would also download Spybot and AdAware immediately update their reference files (aka virus defs) - check for updates - and run Spybot before AdAware. Delete all they find.

If you don't have a standalone firewall either get one - Kerio or ZoneAlarm - both freeware 0r make sure the XP Firewall is turned on - by default it is OFF.

Also download and run CwShredder Download at the bottom of he page under 'Epilogue'.

No, but your m/c will run much better with more.

    OK, chapter 2 ...

Tried to remove the blasterworm, but the removal tool reported the machine was clean (thankfully!)

Dowmloaded Spybot, and Adaware, updated their ref files, and ran both. Some stuff found, but not much.

Downloaded and ran Cwshredder - clean machine.

Still hitting the same problems. Can't switch between users, machine hangs at some point between the two. Also booting is still very intermittent with hangs at seemingly random points. What really confuses me is the lack of consistency of it all ...

Spotted another small point - occasionally I'm in IE (Google) and the machine hangs, and tries to reboot. Usually fails to reboot, and leaves me none the wiser.

Settling in for a long haul on this one ....

Going back to your first post - are the problems listed there the same as those before you made a repair of XP?

I am hovering here between a hardware or software problem - possibly both.

Good idea to check out the hard disk .....

Go to Start > Run and type in cmd
At the cmd prompt - typically C:\documents and Settings\user name> type chkdsk /r - note the space in this.

Chkdsk will locate bad sectors and recover readable information.

Little concerned by your repair which 'seemed to complete'.

What sort of XP CD do you have - full install, recovery or ??

Have you gone into "Event Viewer "?
Check both "Application and System views ".
Since you have done a fair amount of cleaning / fixing you may want to "clear" the views (save first if you want). Once cleared, go back and repeat steps that seem to cause problems. If no answers, try recreating errors in "safe mode ". Your errors appear to be more software than hardware.. locks or hangs seem to lean that way... shut downs, pegged cpu, lean to hardware. But nothing is carved in rock.
