hey i'm running windows ME. i have a 500+mhz processor and 128mb SDRAM.

recently wen ive been starting Windows it's been taking ages to load everything and then will only work very slowly (using the keyboard to navigate). the mouse freezes up and the pointer moves to the top right of the screen and will not work at all.

then after 5 to 10 mins (it varies) the mouse frees up and everything runs at normal speed.

here's a screenshot of my startup programs from msconfig, if it helps:

because i don't understand this at all.

oh yeah and if you just restart it will work staight away.

i'm really confused so any help will be greatly appriciated.

    thanks in advance

    Mike

    Hi Mike
Welcome to the boards! I can't seem to get to the picture you've linked to. Here's a great page that will help you sort out what you can uncheck safely. If in any doubt...post back.

i not 100% sure how to use that list:

here's my startup programs from msconfig:

    ScanRegistry
    TaskMonitor
    PCHealth
    SystemTray
    LoadPowerProfile
    CountrySelection
    LoadQM
    Tweak UI
    LoadPowerProfile
    SchedulingAgent
    *StateMgr
    Machine Debug Manager
    Microsoft Office StartUp
POW! (this is my ad killer)
    load=

i know it might not be to do with that but i dont know what else it'd be.

At the bottom of the page Daisy linked to, click on 'this page' under the warning header. That page has a key at the bottom of the page. Look for your startups from the list on the first page and check or uncheck as suggested.

    You can safely uncheck

    TaskMonitor
    PCHealth
    LoadPowerProfile
    LoadQM
    LoadPowerProfile
    SchedulingAgent
    Machine Debug Manager
    Microsoft Office StartUp

Those are the ones I do know, check out country selection and load= to see what they are. I'm pretty sure country selection is for your modem setup and can be unchecked now.

I believe, if you delete Task Monitor, your Defragmenter will not function as it should. If you delete Load Power Profile (2X) you can not change setting for your Power Management.
Now neither are great losses and if you do not use them, then no problem.

Perhaps your System Restore folder is very large and is full, causing deletion of old restore points and replaced with new. Maybe disable System Restore, reboot, and then enable it?

I didn't see any mention of virus protection there, but maybe it's being started manually.
