I want to create a clone of my hard drive on a hard drive attached to a USB port on my machines, one with XP home and the other with XP Pro. From the Ghost manual this does not seem to be a problem but thinking ahead about the restore, I can see a problem if the computer is not starting and the USB software does not get loaded, then I can not use the image on the hard drive attached to the USB port. So I guess if one uses a floppy to boot the computer, there has to be some USB drivers on the floppy to allow me to restore the hard drive on the computer, right? Also, will a computer with XP boot up with MS Dos or PC Dos? or both? Ghost seems to use PC Dos and I would have to get a boot disk from my WIN 98 machine with MS Dos, right?

Ghost uses PC-DOS by default. However, if you choose to use MS-DOS, you will need to format a floppy disk with either windows 95/98 system files in it.

When you attempt to create a bootdisk, Ghost gives you an option to choose between PC-DOS or MS-DOS. If you choose to use MS-DOS, then you will be prompted to insert disk with Windows 9x system file which you have created earlier.

On the issue of USB support, if I remember correctly, there is an option to add USB drivers support when creating the bootdisk. You will have to try it out.

Note that if you use MS-DOS, there will be no mouse support. And yes, Ghost will boot into both DOS

    Let us know the results.

    WIN XP and PC Dos

Many thanks for your help. My question is: Does WIN XP boot up with PC Dos so I can use the Ghost boot disk without using MS Dos?

The ghost boot disk will contain either the ibm dos operating system or the microsoft dos operation system. Either will boot an xp computer. Note: you must set the computer's bios to boot from the floppy prior to seeking to boot from the hard drve.

You cannot boot from an ibm os ghost boot disk and run msdos on the hard drive because msdos does not exist in xp installs. You will need a ghost boot disk with msdos to run msdos applications.

You CAN use msdos on the ghost boot disk AND have mouse support by adding the appropriate mouse driver to you msdos boot floppy. You can get the mouse drivers off a win98 installation or download a customized win98 boot disk with mouse support at www.bootdisk.com .

A recent update to Ghost has altered the MS-DOS files copied to the Ghost Boot Disks to include a mouse driver. In my opinion that is not a step forward since I do not want to use the mouse when working with Ghost.
