OK. I cannot find anything about this problem. When I click start-search-files and folders. Nothing happens. No beep, no error, no window comes up- nothing. If I right click on a drive and try to search nothing happens. If I use explorer to search, nothing happens.

But if I launch my computer or another window and use the search icon in the title bar, it works just fine.

All I have running is virus scan, and a firewall. It was working just fine and then stopped. I am unsure why though or how long ago it stopped. I used to have tweakui, but deleted it long ago. I have tried the sfc /scannow option and it still doesn't work, and I have tried the fast repair opion with the cd. After both of those, it still dont work. LOL

So does anyone know why the only place I can search from is from the menu bar of an open window??? Is there a file I am missing now or something or is this an easy problem? I am also not on a network, this is a standalone and I have full priviledges. I tried just out of curiosity using the Admin account and another user account I have on this, and the results are the same.

Thanks for any help you have. I also have all the latest service packs installed and updates, and have done two virus scans twice to just make sure.

You could try repairing IE. I believe the search function is a part of IE install files.

I think the repair idea is a good one. May be some other odds and ends that aren't working quite right.

But for purely searching, I don't use the WE search features any longer. I tried a free search app suggested on here called Agent Ransack and there is simply no comparison.

After trying it a month or so on my XP PC, I also loaded it on our main file server because searching over 900 Gb of drive using the M$ search tools took slightly longer than forever. Agent Ransack is better and much, much faster. It finds files that Windows Explorer swears are not there.

    Newt,

Great! I did what you said, and ran a repair on IE6 and then rebooted. It fixed the search problem. Ya I understand what you are getting at with using a better search utility, but it wasn't so much that I use it very much, it was more the fact that it just didn't work that was aggravating the heck out of me. LOL

Once again thanks for the advice
