Well, I finally got windows xp home edition installed on my wife's pc. Here's the problems:

    1. It won't keep the time and date settings. I replaced the BIOS battery and set the clock there. It's fine. It's the OS. It just wants me to reset the clock and calendar EVERY TIME I turn the PC on.

    2. I'll be working on it and it'll all of a sudden just reboot. I have one stick of 128 MB of memory in one of two slots.

Someone please help. I'm at my wits end here. Before you ask, no I don't have an anti virus installed. I go to install it that's one of the times my system decides to reboot. Thank you.

This may be because you do not have an Internet connection set up. Go to Control Panel > Date & Time > Internet Time and uncheck the 'Automatically synchronize .... ' box.
This MS Knowledge Base Article Windows XP Restarts Unexpectedly or Restarts When You Shut Down the Computer may help.
Set up the m/c as suggested and post any relevant error message here (double click on message in Event Viewer to open, click on the icon below the up/down arrows to copy to clipboard and paste here)

    MORE HELP PLEASE

Okay, the thing about turning off the auto-restart on critical error, that made a change. Now instead of restarting it goes to a blue screen and says the following:

A problem has has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

    IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

    Any ideas?

    thanks.

Oh yeah, the turning off of the internet time sync for the clock didn't work either. Thanks.

That usually means there is incompatible hardware or an incompatible device driver on your computer.

    Clean install or upgrade?

As for you time problem, is XP set to the correct time zone? (ok, grasping at straws here, but never heard about a similar problem)

    Just adding in.
Your current problems aren't caused by this.
BUT XP runs a LOT nicer n faster with min of 256k RAM.

Once get everything else straightened out that'll be your next step.
