at least I can help a little here!

"RJ45" and "RJ11" refer to types of connectors - an "RJ45 cable" is colloquial for a cable fitted with RJ45 connectors...

    RJ11 has 6 ways , only 4 connections are possible (6/4)
    RJ12 has 6 ways , all 6 connections are possible (6/6)
    RJ45 has 8 ways , all 8 connections are possible (8/8)

RJ45 is the one you want.

Usually, these connectors are crimped (not soldered) onto the cable, which comprises 4 twisted pairs. (UTP = unshielded twisted pair). The cable itself is known as "Category 5" cable

Two cable profiles! - flat and round - make sure to get the correct sort of connectors for whatever style of cable you have.

It's not as easy to make up these cables as it is to solder together a normal serial cable with D-connectors - probably easier to try to get one ready made.

( "thin ethernet" uses a different sort of cable altogether, not suitable for RJ45 connectors, it's a single coaxial cable - totally different - using BNC connectors)

this link describes how to convert a straight ethernet lead into a crossover. As straight leads seem to be much more readily available than crossover, it looks like it should be useful for your purposes - it has quite a good description and gives the pinning for both straight and crossover wiring. The page also has a link to further information about setting up peer2peer ethernet between 2 PCs without hub etc...

    best wishes, HJ.

    Hi,

It’s me again. I just installing and setting the NIC fast ethernet card. I can install the driver, too. And I configure the network in control panel. I also followed the guidance in Practically Networked’s site edition 13 February 2003 on Networking as suggested "Two PCs Via a Crossover Cable." The installed network components are: Clients for Microsoft Network/Dial-Up Adapter/The NIC fast ethernet card (e.g. 3Com, D-Links, etc.)/ Dial-Up Adapter for the NIC fast ethernet card/TCP-IP for Dial-Up Adapter/TCP-IP for the NIC fast ethernet card/Fileas and Print Sharing. But I still can not connected with the other pc. Why? What’s wrong or missing with the configuration? And how to solve this problem?

Your kind help is much appreciated.

    TIA,

    Yasmin

(from the link in my last post, following to the suggested description of how to set up ethernet with no hub using a crossover cable! direct to the "set up ethernet" page )(look ~ a third of the way down the page)

    best wishes, HJ.

    Hi, Hugh Jarss.

Thanks for the help. I follow the guidance in the url link. The result is as follows:

    1. First computer (with NIC onboard) shows eror mesage saying "Microsoft Networking. Te following error occured while loading protocol number 0. Error: 254.â€
What’s the meaning of this error? Why it happened? How to fix it?
When I tried to open the shared folders on the second PC, it always trying to find it continuously without any success.
    2. Second computer. It can detect the first computer and see the shared folders. But when I tried to open the folders, it request a password. When I keyed-in the password, it says "The password is incorrect.â€
The ping from th second PC to the first PC was successful. But the ping from first pc to the second pc always fail (time out).

What’s the rule of thumb on setting the password for network? Is the name should be the same as the computer name for each pc given during the network setup (Identification in the Network)? How to delete the old one and create a new password?

Thank you very much for your patience to guide me in this new (for me) world of simple networking.

    Kindest regards,

    Yasmin

    Hi Yasmin

re: the password thing when you try to see the files: it sounds like it's the sharing password that's holding you up.

Do you actually need to use a password to protect the files - it's far easier without one, if you are not worried about unauthorised access to the computers...

    So for
go to the first computer, start Windows Explorer, select whatever you are trying to share and choose File>Sharing...

...select Full Access (for the moment anyway, to get it working) and make sure there's nothing in the Full Access Password box (not even a space...) Apply, & then OK it...

Then, try from "second computer" again to see if it will now let you at the files.

    ==

not sure about the rest at the moment - DCC doesn't involve pings, drivers, IP addresses or anything, you just jump straight to seeing the folders on the other PC - but will have a look round, see what I can find out...

...with luck someone who knows will beat me to it!

Hey! - feels like you're quite close to getting it working now...

    best wishes, HJ.

Dear Houston, Hugh Jarss, Mudd, and BillyBob.

Thank you very much for your patience, precious time, knowledge and experience to teach me about simple home networking between two PCs. Now the network run smoothly. Without you all, I think it will never work! May God bless you!

My next question is as follows:

When creating the folder to be shared during the trial and error (from my side due to the error 254), I gave so many names to the same folders and/or drives. Now I want to delete some of the folders with specific names that is not needed anymore. How to delete it and from which computer?

    Thank you.

    Cheers,

    Yasmin

    Hi,

Further to my last posting, now I know how to delete (actually to remove) the shared folders from the list.

    Thanks.

    Cheers,

    Yasmin
