Hi. We are running Windows 2000 ServerOS as the Domain Controller on our LAN, with 7 stations using Win2KPro. That's fine so far. Now the boss wants to plug in his laptop with XP Home. I can't get XP home to join the domain. Is is possible? Tnx, Greg.

On a corperate network, Windows XP Professional Edition can join a domain and take advantage of domain-based management features such as group policies and roaming profiles. A system running Windows XP Home Edition can access domain resources such as printers and servers, but it does not exsist as an object in the domain. It might not be possible, but, the very knowledgeable people on this forum might have a work around for your problem. So hold on and give them a chance to research it and respond. Good Luck.

Like lj50 said, XP-home cannot join a domain. Gotta upgrade him to XP-pro if he wants to do that.

    There are rumors afoot.............

I've verified none of these, but if you try them, we'd all be interested to know the results.

The first involves using the autologin function of X-Setup. In the section under Network \ Auto Login \ Windows NT/2K/XP \ Settings are instructions for autologin to a domain after a reboot.

Older versions of TweakUI for XP also had this function, if you can find one, but it was removed in newer versions.

The third method will allow access to network printers and shared files and folders.

    1) Log in to XP Home using a local account that has no password.

    2) Open My Computer, Tools, and click "Map Network Drive ".

    3) Select a folder on the network by using the Browse button.

    4) After selecting the folder, click on the different username link on the page.

    5) In the Connect As dialog box, enter **Domain**/User as your username, where **Domain** is the one you are trying to connect to. Enter your domain user password and click OK.

    6) When you boot up the next time and click on the Network Drive, the credentials are sent and the drive opened. You can then access files and folders throughout the domain.

    And the saga continues.......

There are many workarounds. Most require as much work as earning the money to buy Pro.
