Just purchased an S6300NX Compaq computer with XP Home and would like to upgrade to XP Pro. Has anyone done an upgrade like this? The hard drive has 2 partitions, one being the C drive, as usual, and the other is the D drive which contains all the programs required for a complete recovery. Someone at Compaq said the warranty would be voided by doing the update and that the partition for the recovery would be destroyed. He also mentioned that there could be problems with the drivers for some of the hardware on the machine.

You'd have to look at the details---maybe the whole waranty would not be cancelled, but only that related to software.

The recovery partition would be of no use after the upgrade, anyway, since it contains the original Home installation. You may as well recover the space if possible.

Home and Pro use the same drivers. Setup would use the current hardware configuration and most or all of the current drivers. "Driver problems" seem highly unlikely.

Get a good piece of imaging software (Acronis, Drive Image) so you can make your own recovery media and you're good to go.

    Recovery

Thanks for your advice. Compaq has a program on the machine that allows you to make a complete set of Recovery CD's (in my case 7) just once. The recovery restores the extra partition and restores the machine to the factory delivered state. Was also thinking of using Ghost to prepare a toptal image of the drive on an external HD connected to a USB port.
I figure in one way or another I should be able to restore it.
