I have 3 physical HD's and 6 partitions, and was getting ready to reformat a drive and reduce the number of partitions. In Computer Management console, under storage, I have "Removable Storage ", "Disk Defragmenter" and a folder icon with no description - been awhile since I was in this app, but as I recall there should be a description next to this folder? Anyway, when I open it, my drives/partitions are displayed in the lower righthand window as they should be, but there are 2 blank lines with no drives. The upper righthand window is completely blank, regardless of what drive or partition I click on. Most bizzare, my menus are full of blank spaces. Under "Action ", there are 2 blank spaces then "All tasks" and Help. Under "View ", there are 4 blank spaces and then "Customize ". If I right click on a drive/partition in the lower right window, all I get is a long narrow submenu with 7 blank spaces in it! Makes it tough to format/re-partition!

Everything else seems to be working perfectly in the Comp. Mgmnt. console, Control Panel and the PC in general. There are no problems or discrepancies anywhere else.

Any ideas on what may be causing it or how to correct it?

Couple of general repair things to try. The fact that Disk Management is missing it's label and that other things seem to have gone missing does indicate a problem and probably more widespread than you've noticed.

    - Safe mode and log on as administrator. See if things look better that way.

    - Regardless of the result of the safe mode logon,
..start~run~cmd then chkdsk x: /r where x: means do all your drives/partitions and let it check & repair
..start~run~cmd then sfc /scannow (and yes, it will run from the GUI start~run line but you get more info from the cmd window).

Post back with a status update if you would please.

No anomolies found during chkdsk (I do disk checkups on a regular basis). The SFC operation kept asking for my WinXP Pro install disk? I was surprised that there was no log or report upon completion, and no confirmation about replacing files...

After running the SFC and rebooting, the Disk Management console looks and works perfectly! All menu's, display, text, everything. THANKS!

If you look in Admin Tools, Event Viwer, System there should be info about what the SFC did. You were prompted for your cd to restore damaged files.
