I recently had a file server crash and had to set up a new server. I was able to restore from tape backup but had a problem with knowing who had what rights to what folder.

On windows 2003, is there a way to export a folder name, what users have access to it and what the permissions are? I need to do this for about 150 folders on 3 hard drives.

Server class backup software also backs up the permissions information unless you have specifically set it not to and will restore permissions along with data.

Secure Copy (commercial product) can simply make a backup copy of permissions that can then be put on the drive in case of either a disaster like you had or a corrupt permissions file.

If the drives from the other server still worked and had all the data, you could use Xcopy (or similar) to copy across files with permissions.

Other than that, you are pretty much stuck.
