APM doesn't show in my control power under power option, becase of that when shutting down the computer I get the screen "It is safe now to turn off the computer ".When I installed the WINXP this option in the BIOS was off and now it's on but the computer don't shut down like ATX is supose to be. How can I activate APM without installing WINXP from the begining.

    Thanks

Can you be a little more specific -

Are you saying that this problem arose when you installed XP?

Did it work on your previous OS?

I found this earlier at Annoyances.org.....

Naturally---always backup your registry before editing!!!

If you upgrade an earlier version of Windows to XP, you may find that several icons are missing from Control Panel. This is caused by a bug in Windows XP where certain registry settings left over from previous versions are misinterpreted. Here's how to fix it:

    * Run the Registry Editor (REGEDIT.EXE).
    * Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ Control Panel.
    * Delete the Don't load key entirely, and close the Registry Editor.
    * The change should take effect immediately.

    Hope this works for you.

OK - you have Power Options in Control Panel - what tabs are present.

On my install of Pro (shouldn't be different) there are 4 tabs ...

    Power schemes
    Advanced
    Hibernate
    UPS
No APM tab, but I have twin monitors, see note at end.

Under Advanced > Power Button I have set 'Shut Down' and when finished with the m/c just hit the power button.

The settings in BIOS can be confusing and probably differs between makes.

For my Award bios on Asus A7N8X-E mobo the settings under Power Management Setup are .....

ACPI suspend to RAM - disabled
Video Off Method - DPMS support
PWR Button <4secs - Soft Off
    Everything else - disabled

According to one of these articles if you have twin monitors - I do , then the APM tab may not be present - it is not on my m/c

If your BIOS is ACPI capable, the system should have enabled it.

In that case (ACPI enabled) you will not see the APM tab or have APM available. The presence of Hibernate is a pretty good indication of ACPI on the PC since the older and more limited APM did not offer that option.
