Try opening word pad first. Then copy and paste.

    how strange!

Geri, what OS is it pls.?

    - when you say "copy and paste to wordpad" - have you tried cut, copy & paste within wordpad (as opposed to between wordpad and another app)

    and, within wordpad,
    - can you select a piece of text OK?
    - of so, what happens if (with a piece of text selected) you try:
    1) cut (from the Edit menu),
    2) cut (by using CtrlX),
    3) the delete key

    if anything!

At the moment I'm completely baffled :( but there's nothing wrong with trying to get a bit more information / clues...

    best wishes, HJ.

    Hi Hugh
    I'm running windows 98.

Yes I can cut and paste and copy and paste within wordpad.
    I can also change fonts.

Also, when I try to copy and paste to wordpad and it doesn't work and go to close wordpad it asks me if I would like to "save changes" to it, like it has copied to it, but there is nothing there.

What happens if you save the changes and then reopen the file? Can you see it then? This is really a strange one. The only thing I can think of is maybe you have a corrupt wordpad.exe file. I'd try using the system file checker to extract a new copy of it from your win98 cabfiles. If you're lucky, maybe that will get you going.

    curiouser and curiouser...

Your best bet for a solution has to be as Zander says, replace wordpad.exe...

...but as for what's going on :(

please let us know what happens!

    good luck, HJ.

    Hi
The only file checker I have (that I know of) is scan disk and that comes out fine. Is there anywhere I can run a default on wordpad?

Also when I open any of my documents I get this before and after
what I have in the file
    ÃÃࡱá
along with a bunch of small boxes and y's.

I have run a virus scan (McAfee online version) so I know it's updated. No viruses found.

If you can't help that's OK?

Let me ask you this, I have "word" if I load it can I export my documents to Word? Without this problem.

    Thanks for your help.

I dont' know if you can export them to word or not without problems. But, to use the system file checker, click start>run and type sfc and then click ok. You'll see a button you can click on that allows you to extract a file from your cabfiles. I'm not using 98 right now and I don't remember the exact wording but I think you'll know when you see it. Click the button and the type in wordpad.exe. If your cabfiles are on your hard drive it'll grab them from there. Otherwise, you'll have to put your win98 disk in the cdrom drive. Give it a try. I think if you do, you'll be able to figure it out. If not, post back and we can explain further.

at a guess you should be able to open the files into Word OK - and then chop of the mess at the top and the bottom

(using W98) sfc runs much as Zander says but I found that when it prompts for "extract from" I had to browse to the subfolder on the CD called win98 before it would find the cabinets

For "extract to" I just chose the root of C: (as a temporary location until I was sure what was going to happen ;) ) thinking "move it into place when I know it has extracted OK" - but there weren't any nasty surprises

the final location folder for wordpad.exe should be C:\Program Files\Accessories

if that doesn't do it the problem file will be a dll (used by wordpad)unfortunately there are several involved - I have a list here but hesitate to post it until you've tried renewing wordpad.exe to avoid confusion! If no other programs are misfiring, then wordpad.exe has got to be the most likely culprit.

good luck and best wishes, HJ.

"...I have "word" if I load it can I export my documents to Word? Without this problem. "

That's what I'd do. Word does a lot more stuff than Wordpad and will open any Microsoft text file format along with a number of others (Word Perfect, Lotus, etc.) Install it and try it and I bet you'll like it.
