While closing Netscape today, I got a message telling me my computer was doing a physical memory dump. When I returned to Netscape, I found all my bookmarks gone. I have found this memory.dmp file but don't know if I can do anything with it to restore my bookmarks to Netscape. I also used to be able to add "primary" bookmarks to the upper sidebar were the bookmarks link is. I can't seem to do that now. Any help would be helpful.

    Welcome to the Forum, joe645

    Hi joe645,

The log files that are written when a physical memory dump takes place, are usually written in HEX, and can't be read by the user. A memory dump occurs when your OS, or a program crashes. When your OS crashes it's usually hardware (memory & video cards) related and the log file would be "memory.dmp ", when software causes the crash the file will be "user.dmp ". See this MSKB Article which goes into detail:
Windows Memory Dump File Options Overview Note the OS' to which this Article applies, as it may not apply to your specific OS.

Do a Windows "Find" for bookmarks.html
Start | Find | Files or Folders

What is the size of the file? Open the file in Notepad or Wordpad, and look for Bookmarks. What do you see?

Do you have a recent backup of your Profile, or the bookmarks.html file? If so, you can replace the existing file with the backup. (This is when those frequent Profiles folder backups pay off.)

    memory dump

The size of the memory.dmp file is 80mb and can't be read by any conventional word processor or PDF as far as I know. I had a back up of most all and it will not cause any crisis if I miss one or two. I am curious why I can't put personal links on the bar next to Bookmarks like I did before.

    Hi Joe,

What version of Netscape are you using, and are you using a Theme other than Modern?

Did the inability to add Bookmarks in the sidebar start before or after the memory dump?

Have you tried dragging the link from the Location bar to the Sidebar, or are you only using the "Add" tab?

Using 7.1 and modern theme. It all started after the memory dump. the problem had something to do with accessing a java program (chat room) and cutting it short. don't know how, just know I won't be doing it again.

    Joe,

Did you install the Sun Java plugin, or are you using the Java that came with the Netscape 7.1 program?

What are your system spec's? I'm asking because I'm wondering if you have sufficient RAM, and a processor that meets Netscape 7.1 requirements:

    Windows System Requirements:
    • Windows 98 or 98SE, Windows Me, Windows NT 4.0,
      Windows 2000, or Windows XP
    • Intel Pentium class 233 MHz (or faster) processor
    • 64 MB RAM
    • 26 MB of free hard disk space
