    Problem with Windows (98) Explorer:
After using and closing the windows explorer, when I go to shut down the computer, a window will show up saying "stop responding" with 3 bottoms at the bottom: "Wait ", "End Task" and "Cancel ". I wait for a while and click "End Task" and the Active Desk Top will be lost. Then the computer will shut down. When I re-start the computer the usual desk top background is gone and I will have to click the "recover Active Desktop ".
I have tried to reinstall the "Windows 98 (2nd Edition) ". When the setup gets to the end, there was an error message: "Explorer caused an invalid page fault in module (unknown) at 0000:300001ba0. I am guessing I have a faulty "Explorer" file but I don't know how to repair it and not sure if that's the problem. Please help! Thanks! P Mark.

I had the same problem about a month ago. Explorer was not responding and win98SE locked up. I rebooted and scandisk did its thing and I was back in bussiness.
Now I am having problems with explorer.exe not to confuse IExporer. I have been having almost the same problem as this thread http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=12861&highlight=explorer.exe
My computer runs fine unless I open windows explorer or sometimes certain files.
I have been reading all I can. One option is to replace the explorer.exe with SFC. I havent done this yet because I havent check out all of the options yet. I was going to post this problem on bbs soon to get some help.
I am on my way to work but, I would like to watch your post and maybe I can gain some information from it. Or I will start my own post and maybe this will help us both out.

I don't know what the answer to your problem is but until you figure it out you can just disable the active desktop. Is there a reason you have to use it? If the only reason is to use a certain wallpaper, unless it's an active wallpaper of some type you can convert the pic you're using to bmp format. If you do this, you can use the pic without the active desktop. When I ran win98 I was fortunate in that it was super stable for me when I didn't use the active desktop. If I did, I can't say it was nothing but trouble, but it did give me fits that I never experienced otherwise.

    Dear Zander and giffyo,
Thank you very much for the reply!
I guess I can try the Scandisk.
The active Desktop really wasn't an issue with me. It just that the system (Windows) hangs evert time I use the Windows Explorer (to look at my files). Thanks! P Mark

Replacing Explorer.Exe using SFC would not hurt at all, it could help.

Problem with Windows 98 explorer resolved

    Dear Friends,
Thank you very much for your help!
I extracted (and replaced) the Explorer.exe file using SFC. That did not solve the problem righaway. But then I changed my active desk top to "classic" and reboot. That did the trick. So I think it took a combination of the two measures. Thanks a million!!! P Mark.

Glad to hear that did the trick. SFC is a good tool for such.
I still have a related problem but I will post a tread.
Thanks for posting back and good luck.
