    HEy all,

Ever since I've installed windows XP I've been having problems with my media viewer. I used to be able to splice videos (ie: mpeg/avi) using programs like mpgjoin etc and have been able to ciew them normally in full. Since I've installed win xp i can't view these files in full any longer... they are there as the file size indicated that the full file is accessible but when i go to run them i can only play the first portion of the video before the second portion was added.

I'm able to view the latter portions of vids but i have to click on the progress bar and end up missing sections of the vid. This is annoying as hell considering I need to use media viewer for work I've done myself and for the life of me havent been able to figure a way around it!

IS anyone familiar with this problem and can anyone help?

    thanks in advance!

Though not familiar with your particular problem, I have noticed that some of my videos stop in the middle with WMP. It appears that WMP is very sensitive to errors of any type in the stream. A single bad frame will stall it.

You could try using one of the re-encoding pieces of software. But even these have not gotten all my videos to play in WMP.

Some other players are less sensitive to error:

It's not XP's fault, it's the joiner program you're using.
I went through every free/shareware joiner there is, until I got the one at www.boilsoft.com
It usually works on about everything, however, if there is a problem afterwards, I run it through videofixer from http://www.fixvideo.com/ which seems to do as advertised.
If you're not satisfied with demo/time limited shareware, get Virtualdub at http://www.virtualdub.org
It will fix any corrupt, or non-playable avi (and most mpg's too).
If you need instructions on how to get virtualdub to fix it, let me know.

If it's only mpeg's, what sort are they? Are they mpeg2 for (s)vcd?
WMP hates mpeg2, and will only seem to work properly if you have a DVD player software such as PowerDVD installed, which also installs the correct codecs.
Are they encoded with some strange audio (AC3?) codec maybe?

Try using media p;layer 6.4 as your default player in xp. It's located in Program Files\Media Player\mplayer.exe

and use Options to associate all filetypes with it. That way, all multimedia will open with 6.4 instead of the bloated and sometimes goofy 8.0 version.
