I have not been happy with Netscape 7.02 on my WIN98SE machine. Even with DSL it is very slow. I think the problem is my 200Mhz CPU which just can't handle these new programs very fast. So I bought a new desktop with WIN XP home and need a browser. Doesn't make much sense to install a browser which will
have no support. Have to transfer bookmarks, mail files, address book, newsgroups to new computer from old one. I did download some instructions from the Mozilla web site to migrate these files but would appreciate any advice I can get. Does Mozilla support SSL? This seemed to have been a problem with Netscape. Does Mozilla look like v7.02?

    You go ackerberg!

Here is a small Screen Shot of Mozilla 1.6, using the Modern Theme. I have added some aesthetic tweaks to the background color, and my Tab group, so yours won't be exactly like this.

Definitely go for Mozilla 1.6, as it is very stable. You can do a custom install and forgo all but Mail & Newsgroups, plus spellchecker. It's a small package, and quite fast.

    Good luck!

OK, I have been checking out my files and notice that all my Netscape 7.02 files are designated as Winamp media files, even the mail files in the Mozilla folder in Application Data under Windows. Is that how it should be? If not, how do I get rid of the Winamp designation? If I understand it correctly, there is no way to install Mozilla 6 and then use the data in the Netscape Mozilla folder to apply my profile to the Mozilla 6?
I really appreciate all the help you all have given me on this topic. I have just spent several hours trying to copy all of my data to CD's and a ScanDisk to transfer to my new machine. The Mozilla folder is on the Scandisk and I should not have any problems with Read Only files.

    ackerberg,

You want to correct your Netscape file associations before burning to CD, or at least I would. Here is an old thread which has the solution you used for this very same problem:
Netscape mail files shown as "Winamp Media file

Since you are on a new OS/PC, I would definitely create a new Profile for Mozilla 1.6. You could probably use the Netscape Profile, but it would be my preference to start with a "clean" install. Then copy data from the Netscape Profile, as outline on the Transfer Netscape/Mozilla Files from PC to PC page.

Let us know if you have further questions.

    Bad Memory

    Hi Ra,oma,
I can't believe how bad my memory is that I did not remember the thread with the Winamp file designation that I started. Anyway, I downloaded the zipped version of Mozilla and it is unzipped in a file waiting for me to install it which I will do tomorrow. Since the removal of this program involves deleting the folder it is in, does that mean it is not registered in the Registry? I did notice that the profile is saved somewhere else so that if I install a newer version it will find the old profile so I do not have to set up a new one, is that correct?
I can't thank you all enough for the help you have given me. I look forward to seeing how Mozilla runs on this new desktop, a S6300NX Compaq, which seems to be very fast. It has an Athlon 2300+ processor. Our old 96-97 vintage computers with a 200Mhz CPU were just too slow to handle much of anything except word processing. When I set up a wireless network and loaded the software on one of these old ones, it would freeze on startup and give me much grief. As soon as I removed the wireless software, it behave normally. So I'm keeping my fingers crossed about Mozilla and hope it works well. Will report later.

    Hi Bob,
I can't believe that with my bad memory, I remembered that thread! ;)

You unzipped Mozilla in a folder which you named for this purpose, right? That's all that is necessary, merely unzip the mozilla-win32-1.6.zip file to the folder you created. Left click, and drag the mozilla.exe file to the Desktop and make a shortcut. To the Target field in the Desktop shortcut add your Profile Name:
    "C:\Program Files\mozilla.org\Mozilla\mozilla.exe" -p bob -quiet

The -quiet command line switch will open Mozilla with no splash screen. Your choice...

To uninstall the Zip version of Mozilla, simply delete the folder. There are no Registry entries. The Profile resides in:
    C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\profilename\xxxxxxxx.slt
NOTE: These files are hidden by default.
    To see hidden files:
    1. On the Tools menu in Windows Explorer, click Folder Options
    2. Click the View tab
    3. Under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders

The Profile is untouched by installs/uninstalls, in addition to the added security it offers for your personal data.

With that great new system, I believe you are going to have a terrific Mozilla experience!

Let us know if you have further questions, and happy browsing.

    Mozilla

So far it is fantastic!!!!!!!!!Did not have any trouble setting up the e-mail. Had to change a default port number and everything worked great. Thank you again for all the help.
How do I add icons to the Quick Start menu so they start up with Mozilla instead of IE?

    answered own question

Since I selected Mozilla as default browser, the web address in the quick start goes to the site with Mozilla.

    Problem with mail

    Hi Ramona,
I set my machine up yesterday for mail and it works great. I am having trouble with my wife's account however, using a DSL server, different from our dial up server, which receives our e-mail. Not to bore you with the details, the bottom line is this. We have it working but somehow 2 profiles were set up, one called "default" and the other with my wife's name, and the sent mail part of the program does not work correctly. When we send an e-mail, it gets sent but an error message occurs saying that it can not be saved to the sent mail folder. Since there is no data in our profiles whatsoever, I would like to delete all the profiles and start up fresh since it is very quick to enter the data. My question is this. How do I delete the profiles and start over? Do I simply delete them, then click on Mozilla again to start over and establish a new profile? Thanks

    Hi Bob,

    To delete the existing Profiles:
    Navigate to the Profiles Folder:
    C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles

Then delete the Profile Name folders. Ensure that Mozilla is closed when deleting these folders.

    To create the new Profiles:
Start | Programs | Mozilla | Profile Manager

Let us know if you have further problems!

    Happy Super Bowl Sunday!

    partially fixed problem?

For some reason on the Mozilla setup, two profiles were created, one with my wife's name and the other called default. When I opened the file to set the outgoing mail preferences I saw at the bottom of the screen, a file name with the word "default" instead of my wife's name. So I stupidly changed it and that created the problem of the sent mail not being writable to my wife's sent mail box. I fixed that and it now works. However I now have some more questions. From Mozilla I was able to get into the Profile Manager but could not delete anything, nor did the default profile appear. It seems that if you do the manual installation, there is no way to find the profile manager once you close Mozilla. Do you know which *.exe it is so I can start it from folder with all the Mozilla files and use it in the future to delete profiles?
Also when I imported her address book, it created a separate address book in the list different from "Personal Address Book ". Is there some way to get the addressess in that book or to move the imported address book to the top of the list?
Sorry I have so many questions here, but the old mind keeps working away.

    Not in Programs menu

    This does not work:

    To create the new Profiles:
Start | Programs | Mozilla | Profile Manager

Mozilla does not appear under Programs when I open it because I did the Zip install to a directory. That is why I need to know the executable file that starts up the Profile Manager to make changes. Perhaps you could find the path by opening Programs->Mozilla-> and then looking for Profile Manager and the path to opening it? Thanks.

    Bob,

Big fat DUH! To start Profile Manager:
Add to the Target Line of your Mozilla Desktop Shortcut: -profilemanager

    Thanks

Thank you Ramona for convincing me to try Mozilla. It is a superior browser and very very fast on our computers. I especially like the bar at the top with the folders I can create with special bookmarks, which was on 4.79 but was missing from 7.02, at least I couldn't figure out how to use it if it was there.
When I first started my second installation of Mozilla on a different machine, somehow a default profile was set up, and I changed a name in a file reference which really fouled things up. I completely uninstalled all profiles and the program and started over and everything went well.
BTW, even with the zip installation there are numerous references in the Registry to Mozilla, but they do not look too serious. Depending on what mode of desktop you use, classic or otherwise, Mozilla may or may not appear on the start menu and I have found no way to access the profile manager except by the method you gave.
    Anyway, so far, so good.
    Thanks again.

    Hi Bob,

It's always nice to hear such positive feedback. I'm really delighted that you are enjoying your Mozilla experience!

Trust me, the Zip, or manual install of Mozilla adds no Registry entries. From the MozillaBook 20031017.pdf:
One drawback from installing manually on Windows, is that registry entries do not get created.

My personal opinion is, that it is not necessarily a drawback. If you have found Mozilla entries in the Registry, then they are leftovers from Netscape 7. Only the executable file adds Registry keys. This is also born out by the fact that you have no Mozilla entry in your Start | Program Files.

Yes, the only way to open the Profile Manager is by adding the -p command line switch.

Let us know if you have further questions.
