    :D Hugh,
    BINGO!!! You did it.
I rolled back the Realtek drivers to the last installed version, and everything works perfectly. I tried reinstalling the newer version, and the problem returned. Rather than wasting my time redownloading a potentially corrupt file of drivers, I will wait till they come up with a new upgrade then try again. At least I know where the problem is, and it puts me back in control.
Thank you for all your help,
    Barry

great you got it working - c'mon man all I did was point you in the direction of the drivers, lets be honest...
perhaps post back with the audio driver version you are now showing in case someone with similar hassles searches the thread? AC97s seem fairly widespread, it might stop some other poor benighted individual going round in circles ;)
    very best wishes, HJ

no basement (thank goodness) - but a very clean kitchen floor!

    Hugh,
At least there are some advantages to plumbing problems. I have to get out there and manually mop.
You may minimize what you did for me, but I was truly at a loss. You guided me in the right direction and opened my eyes to possibilities I didn't see. I appreciate your taking the time to help out. I always think it is great when people truly help each other rather than always looking to what they have to gain first. Thanks again.
The AC97 version that caused the problem is: 5.10.0.5420
The AC97 version that fixed the problem is: 5.10.0.5320
I'm not sure if the drivers are bad in the 5420 or if there is an incompatibility with a WIN XP update or if the file just got corrupted during the download. I haven't redownloaded it to try. I'm satisfied with the 5320. It works fine.
I appreciate that Windows BBS is here for people like me.
