I'm having problems with my USB Wireless adaptor. I've had it since October when I had surgery and my dad had set up my old Dell (with WIN98 on it, but I'm not sure if its WIN98SE or just WIN98).

The one problem is that even though its in my startup items, it doesn't load on the little startup items bar on the same bar that was the quicklinks.

The last time I had it working was around the 14/15th through the evening of the 17th. I probably sohuldn't have closed the wireless icon on the day I had gotten it working cause it hadn't worked in about 3 months.

And when I try to click the icon on the desktop where my other program icons are, it refuses to load up. I've tried installing and reinstalling the software so many times. I;ve tried reinstalling the hardware (the adaptor), etc. I even tried a free trial of AceUtilities and deleted the entries that were invalid that were linked to the adaptor.

So, does anyone have a solution? I don't really want to have to call DLINK Tech support, especially if they keep me on hold or something (I read another person's trouble thread and they said they were on hold for 45 minutes - I can't afford to do that unless I have several hours free.)

Not sure anybody is going to have a magic-bullet fix for this one. 98 is often shaky with USB of any sort and USB networking can be quirky on some systems with never a reason to be found.

I rarely recommend system changes until all efforts to make the existing one have failed but in this case, I think you'll do yourself a favor to switch over to an ethernet wireless network card and save the USB for mice or any of the other list of items it does well with.

There is at least a fair chance that an OS upgrade to XP (or even 2000) would get things working but if the hardware is that old, it would probably be real sludgy running either of them.

The only 'fix' I can suggest is to check for a BIOS update and if you find one, flash the BIOS. Might help.

I already have an XP computer. The computer that I'm trying to get the internet to work on is an older computer so an upgrade is impossible (not enough hard drive space - I added a 40 GB harddrive about 3 years ago cause it only came with a 12 GB harddrive).

What to do you mean by flash the BIOS? I'm computer savvy, but not THAT savvy.
