I have Bellsouth DSL and my g/f has DSL through her phone company. When we try to connect to each other using MSN Messenger to voicechat, we can't? It used to work when she had dialup and I had DSL but now that we both have DSL, the connection won't go through. A friend of hers told her that it wouldn't work but he didn't specify why?

Can anyone here help me with this one?

Is she running a firewall? If so, she needs to make sure Messenger has permission to access the net. In Zone Alarm, Messenger has to be allowed "act as server" permission.

Is she also using a router? Configuring routers with Messenger voice chat is a little more involved than just adjusting the settings in a firewall.

She has no firewall, no router. Just basic DSL service through her phone company running Win2000. We just cannot get a connection but we did when she had dialup.

Then the first thing I suggest is that she call her ISP and ask about the problems she's having. It's possible her ISP is using a firewall or their NAT (Network Address Translation) isn't configured correctly.

Ok, I will have her do that but when she got her DSL, one of her friends who deals alot in networking and computers told her that we won't be able to use two DSL accounts in MSN Messenger Voicechat. So....he said that before she got the account.

Take a look Here for more information on the same issue.

I don't see how that is the same issue. Netmeeting, firewalls, routing ports.

I thought other people had the same problem with MSN Messenger. I wonder if the Yahoo messenger Voicechat works?

I've used Yahoo Messenger's voice chat with not only two but three DSL-connected computers. So voice chat will work with DSL connections, I just don't know anything about MSN Messenger to be able to help you out.

By the way, if you both have full time DSL connections (that is, when your computers are running, the internet connection is active), I strongly encourage you to get a firewall. There are several free ones available for download. I've used both Zone Alarm and Sygate's Personal free firewall and they both work.

MSN Messenger's voice chat has NEVER worked right. I've only been able to use it once in all the times I've tried, and my friend was on dialup. All the other times I've had failures. AIM voice chat usually works OK, so maybe try that.
