I am using Windows XP Pro and, with this Program, if the Company propaganda is to be believed, I should be able to upgrade to a larger Hard Drive, or, using a backup Image, restore a drive, after a major catastrophe, with ease.

I have tried both and they only work to a certain degree, and by this I mean that the Files are restored, but the 'New' Drive is not bootable, which makes the Program about as useful as the proverbial t-- on a boar. I could get the same result using an O/S some may never have heard of, called DOS.

I realize of course that I may have made an error in the procedure and would therefore like to know whether anyone using it has been able to upgrade or restore a drive and end up with something that works, without re-installing all the programs.

If so, a listing of the settings, and there are not many, would be very much appreciated.

    I haven't been a big fan of Drive Image since version 4 & 5.
And as much as I'd hate to say this, I've tried InstantRecovery, Paragons Drive Backup, RT's Image Drive and and one more I can'r recall the name of and none have worked as good as Norton's Ghost 2003. No hassles...works in Windows AND DOS...and the drive actually boots after a restore!

    Give it a try.

I used to use Drive Image and I never had a problem with it. It always worked flawlessly. However, I was using 4.0 and have never had any experience with the newer version. The only thing I can think of is that when you restored a partition, there was an option in the advanced options to hide the partition after restoring it. If this option is set, it would certainly cause the drive to become unbootable. It's probably not your problem because in the older version, the option was unchecked by default. The newer versions may be different though. Also, if this is what's happening, you wouldn't see the drive in windows explorer. If it's the only drive in the computer, you'd certainly get an error message trying to boot from it. I'd take a good look at the options of the program and see if there's anything there that could cause it.

I ran into similar problems trying to use Drive Image 7.0, it looks as if it has some nice features, but I could never get it to do a Restore of an image file without an error... also it was slow as molasses in winter to even create an image file.

Luckily, when you buy DI 7.0 you should also have gotten a free copy of DI 2002 along with it... I've never had a problem restoring an image file using DI 2002 with Win XP, so maybe you should just stick with that version.

In order to use DI 7.0 you have to install the Microsoft .Net framework and I suspect that may be what's causing you problems... the ability to create image files without leaving XP sounds nice, but seems to me to be more problematic than it's worth... it took my system about 20 min to create an image file in DI 7 (and it ended up not working) and only 8 min to create the same image file in DI 2002 including the time to boot to the Caldera DOS DI uses, complete the image file creation and boot back to XP... and the image file restores flawlessly.

The only reason I can see for using DI 7 is for the ability to create backups while in XP, but I wasn't very impressed with how it works... my advice: stick with what works... DI 2002. :)

I've been seeing a lot of this as far as DI 7 is concerned. It's the very reason I don't use it. It's a porker too. The program itself is 45 MBs not to mention a 40 MB install for MS's .Net framework. And to think it used to fit on a floppy disk. The .Net thing is somewhat negated though by the fact that there are other apps that require it and I'm sure there'll be more to come. In the end you'll probably have to have it for something else anyway. But... 45MB's to image a drive????

I've tried Acronis True Image and have been using it with success since Oct. 2003. But I'm still using WIN 98SE.

They have a special currently available at $9.95 for those that have Norton Ghost, here:

    http://www.acronis.com/products/trueimage/offer.html

    Hope this helps.
