    Hi Pete
Turned the newly built (BY ME ME ME ME ME) computer on and it booted up just fine. Went through all the identifying hardware bits couldnt find some so wanted the win98 disk. As this has just seemed to have gone poof recently thought all was lost. But then I remembered (Iwas gonna install the XP anyway) so rebooted and am now reformatting. will keep you updated tomorrow or some time as its getting late now.
    Thanx

Hi Stitch - Great news and well done :D

Hope all continues to go well - don't forget to load the VIA drivers, etc as soon as you have XP in - and remember antivirus and firewall before you go anywhere near the Internet - if you decide to update.

    Hi Pete
    Well guess what IT WORKS.
Got XP all installed and doing the drivers this morning. Couple of problems though which i think comes from all those little wires. I have no internal beeps, no light on the power button or on the dvd drive. havnt tried the front usb yet but as these are on a different block of pins i am gonna presume that they are ok. Should i try reversing the wires do you think

    Hi Stitch

A little puzzled here - I have not come across an ASUS CD which is bootable - is that the one you had in the drive?

I would reload the VIA 4 in 1 drivers for a start.

Check the position of the power led lead connectors - pins 1 & 3 on the top row - try reversing them f they are correctly installed. This should be a 3 pin connector with 2 pins occupied - centre position empty.

Check the power and cable connections to the DVD drive.

I'm out for an hour or so now and I'll review the situation when I return.

    Hi Pete
I now have drivers installed, power light is working everything seems to be ok, except i still have no internal beeps.
Decided to put a modem in as it needs to go online for driver details for the usb for some reason. I just wont leave the phone line in the back when im not using it so the kids cant get on.

I put a strong password on the kids' comp, also on dial up, so they have to get me if they want to go online. I have a flat fee unlimited service for them, but I want the final say over MY phone line. Sounds like you learned a bunch and had a good time building the kids a comp. Glad it went well. Let's have a round of applause for PeteC as well! :D

Stitch - building your first PC is a great (and very satisfying) achievement - congratulations!!

Hope you have installed antivirus and firewall - good free av is AVG and firewall Kerio or ZoneAlarm although as you have XP you could use the inbuilt firewall.

To activate firewall go to Start . Control Panel > Network Connections - right click on DialUp eg BTOW, Freeserve or whatever you have > Properties > Advanced and check the firewall box.

Try reversing the leads on that round device - I feel sure it is the speaker as you noted no other leads.

Out again shortly to clean up another infected PC - will check back on return.

Do you know I recomend this site to just about everyone. I have even put the link to the site on to floppy's and hand them out.
I say that because here i am on a computer built by me (and you) on the inter net everything seems to be runing ok (still no internal beeps but hey this was a first for me) down loaded anti virus updates now downloading windows updates to go with the ones i have already on disk, After this I think I will do a completer recovery disk for the future. I might even let the kids go on their new machine one day you never know.

    Way to go BBS

Thank you very much Pete your help as usual has been invaluble. If you come up with any more ideas regarding the internal speaker let me know thanks.
