On multiple profiles on two computers, Netscape 7.1 keeps "disappearing" email addresses in address books. The Personal Address Book appears stable (I think), but not additional ones. I exported the address books in ldif format and opened in Notepad as suggested in a January 2003 post by Ramona.

In Notepad, I found that the Personal Address Book showed that the sub-group email list named "Attendees" had 48 emails. This is less than it should be. To make matters worse, when I look at that same sub-group email list in netscape, only 12 are visible. And, when exporting that sub-group list, only 12 show up when viewing it in Notepad. However, when emailing that list, it actually emails to the 48.

Please advise as to what's going on and how to fix this...

    Welcome to the Forum, Chamlin!

    Hi Chamlin,

When you imported the LDIF files to your Netscape 7.1 Address Book, looking in the left pane, are all "Lists" viewable, and listed under Personal Address Book?

When you view the 12 addresses in the List, are there blank spaces above or below those 12 addresses? Scroll down as far as you can...

One last question: you exported from which application?

    Thanks!

    Ramona :D

Looking in the left pane, all "Lists" are viewable, but not listed under Personal Address Book. And before I go on, the problem at hand did also happen when they were listed under Personal Address Book (PAB).

In an attempt to fix the problem and determine whether my addresses were still actually in the lists, I exported my Personal Address Book to my desktop as an ldif, thinking the lists would come along with it. The names of the list got exported within the PAB but not the lists themselves. So then, I exported the individual lists.

I'm no longer sure why I did this, and it was truly a de-duping hassle, but now by Address Book Pane shows as follows:

Personal Address Book (which is empty)
    Collected Addresses (empty as well)
All Addresses (Created to import the ldif's I exported as described above)
    Mailing List One
    Mailing List Two
    ---------------------------------------------------------
When I view the 12 addresses in the List, there currently aren't any blank spaces, but there have been. At times I have deleted them.
    ----------------------------------------------------------
Again, I exported from Netscape 7.1.

BTW, thank you, Ramona, for all of your work on this board!

    Peace,
    Bruce

    Hi Bruce,

Thanks for the kind words, much appreciated! :)

I'm a little confused by your feedback, as you first stated:
The Personal Address Book appears stable (I think), but not additional ones. Then later you stated the the Personal Address Book is empty. Are you saying that when you exported the Personal Address Book as an LDIF file, to the Desktop, that you lost all the addresses that were in the Personal Address Book at that time? When you refer to "additional ones ", you have more than one Address Book? I ask because you are also referring to Lists. We need to clarify whether we are talking about multiple Address Books, or a Personal Address Book with Lists?

    I'm also confused about this:
All Addresses (Created to import the ldif's I exported as described above)
Could you give me a bit more detail please.

I have been trying to recreate what you've done in exporting/importing your Address Book and Lists (if they are lists).

I exported my Personal Address Book, which contained one list, to the Desktop, and then Imported it back into 7.1. The list was exported, and then imported with the Personal Address Book. All addresses are viewable in the right pane, and there are no blank fields. Lists contained in the Personal Address Book should export/import. However, if we're talking about multiple Address Books, that must be done individually.

Your Address Book(s) is/are probably corrupt, and unless you have a backup, not sure we can rescue your data. When you opened the .LDIF files in Notepad, did you see any obvious signs of corruption, such as long lines, blank spaces, or binary garbage at the end?

Look in your *.slt folder, and then post all the *.mab files you see listed, if you will please.

You might want to take a look at this excellent explanation of The Address Book and see it if gives you a better understanding of the Address Book component.
