I recently created a file that exceeded 32 meg in size, and could not close it or save it - even to an empty 100 meg Zip diak. There is no practical limit for my hard drive, as there are gigs to spare. It appears to be that Word 7.0 cannot deal with a file larger than 32 megs.

Is there a limit to Word file size?. And if so,is there any way to increase it?

I had to split the file into two sections in order to complete my chore, and this was not a very satisfactory solution.

What Operating system are you using? And is the drive Fat32 or NTFS?

Not exactly your situation, but I have Word 9.0 on both of my machines (Win 2K Pro, NTFS). Many files I work with are larger than yours, often 40-50MB due to lots of graphics. I've never experienced any problem such as yours.

Same here re XP-pro, 512Mb memory, and a newer version of word.

I just combined two overly large documents into one stupidly huge document of around 160Mb. I made matters even worse by getting the documents so large by embedding power point presentations in them since PP is horrible to deal with when done that way.

A file safe took a while and the PC appeared to be locked up while it was in progress but after a couple minutes the thing did complete the save. With a slower machine or less memory, it would have taken lots longer or possibly not completed at all.

It's almost certainly not Word that's causing the problem.

That being said, a word document of 32Mb probably indicates there is a better way to create, structure, and store whatever it is you are working with.

Thanks for your replies, guys, I am running XP and my file system is NTFS. Other than that, I cannot think of anything that might have an effect on my system. Remember, though I am running Word 7.0, not one of the later versions that apparently most of the responders use.

The file in question does have many images, and that is the main reason for the size - rather than text. The images, though, are mostly less than 100K in size

For the time being, I am living with the "split" file, and it is not that important. It is just that I thought my present machine - a Dell 8250 with lots of power and memory put me out of reach of such problems. I have no reason to even think of upgrading MSOffice.

    Thanks, again.
