I have a new HP pc running XP home.In the program files there is a folder named BackWeb. Is this spyware? Does anyone know what this program is for, or does? Is it safe to uninstall this program?

My Mom's HP was loaded with Backweb. I got rid of it as well as I could, but it kept coming back with error messages prompting for a fresh reinstall of Backweb, and warnings that applications would fail without it. I spent some time prying the beast out of the machine- it was tentacled deep in the registry. Everything works just fine, now, but, fair warning, it ain't easy to get rid of. Be prepared to examine every internet enabled application.

Yes, Spybot did a good job of disabling much of Backweb. But every time the computer would boot a number of error messages would pop up that such and such couldn't be found, this and that was closing, etc. I had to clean up the registry, and it was tedious and time consuming, and will be again on the next OEM I have to do that has Backweb stuff, because there are so many different configuratons, and it is spidered deep in the system. Mike Flynn's clean up tips helped me a lot.
