When ever I try to click on a news video link for a news article at any newspaper website I get a error message stating the the program has performed an illegal operation will be shut down. The following is the details of the message. Notice that the two messages are slightly different. They are from two different attempts to viewing the video. Is it possible that I have a corrupt dll file? I am using Netscape 7.1 and Windows 98se.
    thanks

    Hi drhans2,

The NPPL3260.DLL belongs to the RealPlayer application. Do the sites where you are receiving the error specify any specific requirements for the video's?

Can you give us some links so we can go to these sites and try to access the video's in question, please.

    Thanks!

    Ramona :D

    Hi Denny,

Thanks for the link, and I had no problem viewing the video, so let's assume that your RealPlayer is at fault.

What version is your player? To check the version, open RealPlay, click on Help | About RealPlayer. The Version # should be there.

    Hi Ramona,
It say's it's ( RealOnePlayer) version 2.0. I also noticed that ZoneAlarm wanted permission to access the internet for the RealOnePlayer Application. I granted it and retryed to view the news site and failed again. I will see if there are any updateds for RealOnePlayer and install if needed.

    Denny,

Before you upgrade, let me look around at the Real Networks site and see if I can come up with something. Upgrading may worsen your problem.

Thanks Dennis! I'm still using the old RealPlayer 8, Version 6.0.9.584, and had no problem with the video.

    Hi Ramona,
I viewed the link to RealPlayer and it's looks like I need to un-install RealOnePlayer. I did a search like they said for the utility program (r1pclean.exe) It was not found under C:\.
I do however have a uninstall choice on the start menu. My finger is ready to strike. Will let you know if it works.

    Hi Ramona,
I checked the link and did the un-install and than downloaded and re-installed RealOnePlayer version 10. Netscape still crashes when I try to view the video.. I also ran two different utilities to clean up the regestry after the un-install. Seems like there's still a problem. RealOne Player seems to work ok when run from there program.

    Denny,

Look in your C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape\plugins Folder. Is there an NPPL3260.DLL, or similar file listed in your plugins?

    Hi Ramona,
I have that file in two different installed copies of netscape 7.1. (Two different named folders) Also have a folder for Version 6. I want to get rid of the all redundant copies and all the files associated with it. What I would like to do is un-install everything and start fresh. However I want to make sure that I retain my email and bookmarks and any other files needed for my profile. Can you advise what folders I need to copy and rename for back-up purposes & safety. I think this way will be a better approach. Any thoughts?

    Hi Denny,

You mean that you want to uninstall all Netscape applications, and start over with one Version? If so, here are some tips for a clean install: Performing a Clean Install

Before you go to those lengths do try this first: Download these plugins from Holger Metzger's site: real.zip
Unzip the file, and then copy the two files:
    nppl3260.dll
    nppl3260.xpt
    to your C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape\plugins folder
Overwriting the existing files (if there)

Also check your settings in RealOne to ensure that it is the default player for your video files.

    See if this might work...

    Ramona,
I downloaded and replaced the two files and tried to view the video clip. Netscape crashed again. RealOne seems to work ok by itself. But when accessed from Netscape it always crashes.

    Ramona,
After reading your notes / tips on Performing a Clean Install, I will need to find the time to do all that. I might cut to the chase and just save the profile and address book files & than un-install /delete/and clean any registry entries that I have for all of copies of Netscape. Still very time consuming... or for now I just won't worry about viewing any video clips.. Thanks for all your help in this matter. Some things are just not worth correcting.. .This might be one of them... Thanks again.

Not being one to abandon my Netscape/Mozilla users without solving their problem, happened to see a thread on another Forum, which offered a possible solution for Denny. This is roughly what I sent Denny via PM :

Happened across this thread, and thought of you and your RealOne problem:
    RealOne Player Plugin

This guy installed an older Version and was able to stream video. If you use RealOne for burning, and jukebox features, you might not want to give it a try, but if not, you have nothing to lose since it doesn't work now...

Here is the link for RealPlayer 8:
    http://forms.real.com/real/player/b...lp_file_dl=true

It says for Windows 95, but you can run it on 98SE, as that's what I use on 98SE.

If you do decide to give it a try, then once you have RP8 installed, remove all RealPlayer plugins, from the plugins folder. Then find the real.zip file again.
Unzip the file, and then copy the two files:
    nppl3260.dll
    nppl3260.xpt
    to your C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape\plugins folder

If this works we can post it on the Forum...

    Denny reported:
did as you suggested and Bingo... It worked. I was able to go back the the web site that I was having the problem with and view the 4 minutes and 50 second video.
Thank you very much for keeping my problem on the back burner.. I'm glad that you didn't give up...... as I almost did....

Great news Denny, and happy viewing!

    Ramona :D
