I recently installed a Belkin 4 Port wired router so I can share the DSL connection between my PC and my laptop - both running Windows 98SE with NIC/PCMIA cards. The internet sharing is working fine.

I would like to have the same data files on each computer and have the files synchronized. When I create a file on the laptop, that file would be added to the PC and vice versa. Also, when I modify a file on the PC, that change would be reflected on the copy of the laptop file. This would go beyond the "My Documents" file to include data files in Quicken, genealogy program, etc.

This sounds like "networking" to me and now that I have connected the computers through the router, perhaps it makes networking simpler. However, before I get my mind too messed up with networking thoughts, I would like to know if my objective above is possible.

I searched the Networking Forum here and did a Google on "Networking Basics" but I couldn't really locate an answer to this specific question.

    Newt,

I didn't think of Briefcase. I tried working with Briefcase several years ago and, for some reason, didn't continue using it. Don't remember if it was to cumbersome or I just didn't have enough use for it at the time. I will take another look at it now. Is it possible to use the file update features of Briefcase with a direct connection of the PC/Laptop via the router rather than shuttling floppies back and forth? Some, but not many, of the files I use on both computers are larger than 1.5mb.

    ViceVersa
    Free 30 day trial.
Can be done on demand, scheduled, or maintained in real time. Also has "two-way, bi-directional synchronization" (Pro only). Which if I understand correctly, neither drive is master. Any change to a drive is "mirrored" to the other drive.

Dennis L - Thanks for the site. I checked it out and it looks like an outstanding program. Like you pointed out, it would probably take the Pro version to do what I am wanting to do - at $60. Don't know if I am that serious about it. I think I will play around with the Briefcase a bit to see if I can make it work better than I could in the past and then, if no luck, I might pursue the ViceVersa. Thanks.
