A strange sound problem has developed in my 98SE computer.

When running Windows Media Player, I get video, but no audio. When running Quick time I get video, but no audio.
When running MusicMatch, I get audio, just fine.
All windows sounds (pings, etc) seem to be running ok, too.
When I check Sounds in the Control Panel, all play.

I've checked the Device Manager in System, and no ? or ! in the sound subdirectory.

MusicMatch says that it is using the SoundBlaster 220 mixer, but I cannot find which mixer Windows MEdia Player is using.

I've update the Media Player, but am at a loss as to what to do next.

I do not have a separate sound card.

I know this should all work, as it did in the past. I have no idea what happend to cause this problem.

Any suggestions or directions would be appreciated.

Try this before we explore the seemingly unending landscape of codecs.

Open WMP and go to Tools, Options, Devices.

Wait for the window to populate and then click Speakers.

In Audio Device To Use, try Default Direct Sound Device, or any other that may be listed if that one doesn't work.

Also, under the Sounds applet in Control Panel, you can choose what playback device to use.

(These directions are for WMP9, but hopefully, you can find something similar).

What WMP version, are you using? The highest, recommended by MS, for Win 98 is 7.1
Try the newest version (5.0) of Winamp

I have version 7.01 of WMP.

Winamp (ver 2.0 or 2.8 - it's hard to read) is working fine - same as MusicMatch - sound plays great.

In WMP, I do not have a Device option under Tools/Options.

In Control Panel/Sound, I do not have any choices of devices.

However, under Contraol Panel/Multimedia I do have the option to change the preferred playback device. I have tried that - I have several options present, but changing them does not seem to affect the problem I am having.

Check the various options of WMP and see if all files types are associated with it.

That was the broblem I had at one time. Some files were associated with another player.

While using WMP, or QT, open Task Manager, and make sure there is nothing else there what could possibly be using your sound card at the same time.
    Just a guess.

I did download version 9.0 of WMP. I was able to find the "Tools/Options/Devices/Speakers" and change the playback device. Still no sound.

I brought up "task Manager" and ended all jobs except Explorer, WMP and Systray. Still no sound.

I ran msconfig and, in "Startup" unchecked MusicMatch and QTtask. Interestingly enough. When I hit okay, and no, I didn't want to restart the computer right now, I got sound! Then it stopped as quickly as it had started.

Leading me to believe that something has control, and won't let go. Unfortunately, I have not idea what it is!

Any more suggestions will be most appreciated.

Just fooling around, I brought up a website, and when I clicked on a link I got a speck of sound! - I totally have no clue what to do next.

    Thanks for your help!

Go back to msconfig, make a note, which items are checked, then uncheck ALL of them, restart, and see, if a sound is back.

I ran MSCONFIG, noted all checked items, and unchecked everything, restarted computer, and still the same. I double checked MSCONFIG, and two items have "rechecked" themselves:

InControl Desktop Mgr from Diamond (video card), and
    QuickBooks Delivery Agent.

    All other items remain unchecked.

I am still getting the intermittent sound when I click links on webpages.

I also made sure that all the file extensions are associated with WMP in WMP/Options/File Types. Still no sound in WMP.

    Any other ideas?

    Let's go to basics, then.
Please, post back, how are you doing with following items:
    - temps, browser cache cleaning
    - scandisk
    - defrag
    - virus scan
    - scan for spywares (Spybot, Ad-aware, CWShredder, HijackThis)

    Okay,

I have cleaned the tmp files and the browser cache. I've run Scan Disk and De Frag. I've made sure that Norton Antivirus was up to date and scanned. I've run Ad-Aware (there were some things there - I deleted them).

I opened WMP and still no sound :(

I have no idea what to do next.

    Anthing else I can try?

    Thanks for your help.

    It looks clean to me.
I can only see items, that can be safely unchecked from msconfig\startup:
    C:\PROGRAM FILES\DIAMOND\INCONTROL TOOLS 99\DMHKEY.EXE
    C:\PROGRAM FILES\INTUIT\QUICKBOOKS PRO\COMPONENTS\QBAGENT\QBDAGENT.EXE

Just thought I'd let you know, I finally gave up and bought a PCI sound card. We installed it on Saturday, and now I have all the sound I could ever want!
