I installed some addons for Mozilla including the PrefsBar, BlogThis and the Mozilla calendar. When I started Mozilla, I got this cheery little error message:

What's it mean and how do I get rid of it? Thanks.

    shadowhawk,

I would uninstall Mozilla, and reinstall. This time install your add-ons one at a time, running the browser for a short time before adding the additional extensions. I'm not a programmer, so I can't give you the meaning of the error... Someone more savvy may be able to give you a detailed explanation.

Isn't there a way I can uninstall the Calendar and reinstall that w/o reinstalling the browser?

IF the calendar has installed itself in the mozilla program directory it may be easier just ot uninstall, delete the directory, and reinstall mozilla than manually deleting. Your profile should remain intact, since it is stored elsewhere. This is the path of least resistance.

However, if you insist on manually removing it you can go to your ..\program files\mozilla.org\chrome\ directory, and delete the calendar directory, along with any other calendar files you may see. No guarantees, and you still may have to reinstall.

I shut down Mozilla and deleted the Calendar folder. When I tried to restart it, it just refused to load. So I uninstalled, rebooted and reinstalled. Mozilla starts again, but I'm still getting that obnoxious error message, and I don't have the calendar installed anymore. Am I going to have to completely purge Mozilla from my computer in order to get rid of that error message?

edit: I ran REGXPCOM.EXE and that seems to have taken care of the error message. Guess I'll just go without the calendar. I never really used it anyway.

    shadowhawk,

Thanks for posting back with your results. Those add-on xpi files are usually uninstallable, and why I don't bother with them.

Interesting that you rid your error with the regxpcom.exe file. This file is an external executable file that registers xpcom objects, and detects changed xpt files, for those who don't know.

Well if they can be uninstalled, where's the option to uninstall each one individually? And if you never bother with them, how do you get plugins for Mozilla? Some of them are worth having, like the Google bar.

    shadowhawk,
As I mentioned before, they don't have uninstall options.
I copied the Netscape 7 plugins folder and use it in Mozilla.

I know a lot of users like the Google bar, and also the Preferences Toolbar extension. My philosopy is, that the less third-party interference, the better the browser runs. It's purely a personal preference, and I'm certainly not being critical of you, if you like the extensions.

But didn't you say that the add-on XPI files are uninstallable? Didja mean that they're uninstallable by deleting their folders?

I'm gonna operate on that philosophy now too. Just the Google bar and Prefs bar, nothing else.

    shadowhawk,

No, I meant that they can't be uninstalled. Period. Yes, there are workarounds, but not usually successful. To fully uninstall, it usually requires an uninstall of the browser itself, and even then, not successful. You just had that experience... ;)

    Happy browsing!

*sighs* Yeah I learned the hard way. Well as long as I got my Google and Prefs...
