    Ok new question.

My computer will freeze to the point that only the power button will restart it. It boots fine. I checked the Event log under the system tab, I see "Error Service Control Manager event 7026 ", "The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load: i8042prt" 3 days earlier I also received under the Application tab : "Error crypt32 event 8" Failed auto update retrieval of third-party root list sequence number from: <http://www.download.windowsupdate.com/msdownload/update/v3/static /trustedr/en/authrootseq.txt> with error: 0x8ca"
I have run Norton 2004 System Works (Nothing found), ADAware (Nothing), Spybot (Nothing), and CWShredder also Nothing.

I run XP Pro, 1.5Ghz P4, with 512 rdram, Radeon 9600 video card.

Anything else I can do Short of reinstall of windows??
Can you do an install over of the OS??

From a Google search i8042prt is a system function driver for PS/2-style keyboard and mouse devices. You may have a problem in that area. I suggest you remove the keyboard and mouse through Device Manager and let Windows find them again on reboot. If this fails to solve the problem try substituting the mouse/keyboard for one which is known to work. Do each separately.

This URL deals with the problem of Error crypt32 event 8 and offers a straightforward solution.

Try both of these before you contemplate a Repair of XP - look under 'How to run a Repair Install'.

    Hi guys,

I have just installed Windows XP Pro last night on a friend's computer, and he is now saying that it is locking up, requiring a soft reset to restart. Once done, all is well again.

I'll have to find out what he is doing to cause the problem, but are there known causes? I thought that XP was supposed to have sorted out the incompatibility problems with things such as pointing devices? By the way, he uses one of these multi-button trackball things. Other than that, his few devices are quite standard.

Check out Event Viewer for possible clues.

XP has certain drivers on board, but not for everything - and certainly not necessarily for devices introduced after Win XP was released. You may be running one or two generic drivers. Check for driver updates for 'non standard' hardware like the trackball.

Guess you have checked in Device Manager for any warnings?

    Thanks PeteC,

I'm not completely au fait with XP, apart from using it on my laptop, which seems to operate just fine with it.

I'll get onto the problem with his computer some time soon, when I have the time.

Hopefully I'll learn how XP works as regards error logging etc.

Right click My Computer > Manage > Event Viewer > Application/System in RH pane.

Double click on any error message to open and on the button below the Up/Down arrows to paste to clipboard - and on to here if appropriate.

    Thanks very much,

I'll try to get onto it soon, but I might not be able to get round to his house for a few days, unfortunately.

    Imorga11,
When you say it freezes, what do you mean exactly? Do you still have keyboard and mouse function, or no response? Also, does it boot correctly when you restart every time?

    Hi there,

I finally got here. The following report was one of many TrueVector errors:

    Event Type: Error
    Event Source: TrueVector Service
    Event Category: None
    Event ID: 5007
    Date: 23/01/2004
    Time: 20:13:57
    User: N/A
    Computer: TELEPORT
    Description:
TrueVector engine: File "C:\WINDOWS\Internet Logs\TELEPORT.ldb" was corrupt and has been copied to "C:\WINDOWS\Internet Logs\xDB35.tmp ". File "C:\WINDOWS\Internet Logs\TELEPORT.ldb" was corrupt and has been deleted.

TELEPORT is the name given to the computer, if you were wondering.

I could not see any errors in the Device Manager, and when the system froze I had to press the Reset button on the case (keyboad was disabled along with mouse as Imorga11 has experienced).

Anyway, hope someone can help here.

Try disconnecting from the internet (for safety) then removing and reloading Zone Alarm.

There seem to be a number of ZA problems that can cause this error. Several of the 'speed tweaks' will and enough other issues that a remove/reinstall is by far the simplest option.

    Thanks Newt,

I'm seeing him on Saturday, and I'll tell him what you said. Hopefully, this will end the problem.
