On startup I get a blue screen that reads:
"Fatal Exception" then it has the this:
    0e 0157:00003B48

Can anyone tell me what the heck is going on. Or where I can go to find out what that means

At what exact point are you getting that error? Does it eventually go any further?

Google has 2,060 hits on Fatal Exception and OE, and 36 hits on this search. You'll notice most of these has a file named as to which one is doing this. This would help if you could get a more complete message.

This actually is for my aunt. She is using Windows 98 and is having problems. I talked to her again, and she gave me a more complete message. It read:

    Fatal Exception at VXD ####etc..
A protection error has occured while trying to access msgsvr.exe

She was having problems, and did some hard reboots. My guess was the machine rebooted while writing to some file critical to windows. But I'm stumped and trying to prevent from reinstalling the OS for her.

    thanks

Okay, I visited your search. Her error sounds like the one similar to the ones described here:
    http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=302833

She is running McAfee Virus Scan, and that's the one thing I didn't have her take out of startup. I'll have her try that and hopefully that will solve it.

I'll post again with the results.

    Thanks for the help!

Preventing MacAffee from starting up will not fix the problem. Since a VXD file is mentioned, the error is occuring earlier during windows bootup, before MacAffee is started. VXD files are among the first to load.
Reinstalling windows will not help, as the same VXD file will still be there.
If it is a MacAffee file, uninstalling MacAffee is the better solution, reboot, and then install again.
If the problem persists, I would get rid of MacAffee altogethor and get AVG AV for free. It is a good AV program, and rarely causes problems.

Allright....I'll just have her just get rid of McAfee. I've used AVG and it seems to compare pretty well with Norton and McAfee.
    Thanks

Well I had her removed McAfee. But now she gets a different error. I didn't get any info on that one because she said she gives up and is gonna bring it down so I can work with it.
so if i have problems i'll continue posting!
if not....thanks a bunch for all the help!
