My Windows update has suddenly & mysteriously stopped updating (Cannot Display Page). I have tried ALL MS suggestions. I researched & came up with the following old W98 newsgroup item. My symptoms are exactly the same i.e. damaged filed in download program files directory & more than 0 Folders (phantom folder).
Can anyone translate the enclosed solution from W98 to what I am using W2K?

    Newsgroup W98
The other factor that causes Windows Update to error out, is a conflict
with loaded controls (conveyor.ocx and/or any files below) in the

    wudetins.exe
    wudetect.dll
    wuredirb.dll
    wupdatto.dll
    asctrls.ocx
    inseng.dll
    wupdmgr.exe
    cdmwu.ocx

downloaded program files folder in C:\windows. The simplest way to see if
you have a conflict is opening the folder Downloaded Program Files and turn
on the detail view from the task bar. If the status of either are "damaged "
or "unplugged" then you have a conflict. To double check, close the folder
so you are back to viewing all files and folders in C:\windows. Right click
on Downloaded Program Files and select Properties from the pop up menu. The
"contains" entry should show any number of files and "0" folders. If it
shows 1 or more folders you have the makings of a conflict situation.

The way I found to resolve this takes a bit of time to fix. First you
must reboot and initiate the Start-Up menu either by the old "hit F8 at
program start" or holding down the "CTRL" button during post. Select
"Command Prompt only ". At the "C" prompt type without the quotes "cd
    windows\downlo~1 ".

Within this folder do a "dir" command and look for any entries like
"Conflict.1 or Conflict.2" or similar. Even though the name has a "dot" in
it, these are not files but directories so don't be fooled. Change directory
to the first conflict.1 folder by typing without the quotes "cd conflict.1 ".
Within this folder some files are hidden so execute the following w/o the
    quotes, "attrib -h -r -s *.* " Now doing a "dir" should show 2 or more
files in this directory. Erase all files until nothing is left in the
directory. Now Execute the command w/o quotes "cd .." (cd-space-dot-dot) and
you should be at "c:\windows\downloaded program files" prompt. Now type
"deltree conflict.1" and select yes to erase the directory. Repeat this for
all the conflict.? folders you might have. Reboot back into windows after
finishing. Now open the Downloaded Program Files and delete the entries for
Conveyor and Cdmwu if there are any.

Now go back online and try to access Windows Update. Successful
replacement of the controls are indicated by the popup tag asking you if its
ok to install the controls. Select yes and take care to let the controls
download and install properly before opening the next page. Have to be
patient here or you might jam it up again. The other control usually
downloads at the updated driver part of Windows Update. Again select yes to
the pop-up tag and make sure it installed before moving on.

    Thank You!

    Follow up post. Please help!

From command mode I confirmed that my 'download program files' has an unwanted Directory 'Conflict.1' as predicted in the news item I posted. BUT I am at loss as how to delete it as there doesn't seem to be a command 'deltree' in W2K & Renaming didn't solve the problem. I also had no success with the 'Attrib -h -r -s *.*' command (required in the news item). Can anyone suggest how to delete 'conflict.1'?

I know nothing about Win2k but I did find the following with a newsgroup search:

    From: Bruce Chambers
Subject: Re: Is there a command in W2k to delete an entire folder from the cmd line?
    Newsgroups: microsoft.public.win2000.general

Open a DOS box and type "rd /?" for full details. The command you want is "rd /s. "

Also, from Microsoft in case it helps:

    Back to Alice

Thank you for the very useful information. I am now proud to report that I have a 'perfect' download program files directory, with 0 folders as the rd command worked perfectly. Unfortunately it did NOT correct my Windows Update problem. It still gives me the Cannot Display Page message.
I am sort of out of ideas. Let me know if you come accross any other possible solutions.
    Thanks again.

Now that you've gotten that conflict.1 folder deleted I would clear out my Temporary Internet Files (including offline content) and clear the history then try again...if no go then start again with the steps outlined in Microsoft's article,
WINUP-Err Msg: "Cannot Display Page" (Q243787) to see if that helps.

By the way, I'm locked out of WindowsUpdate again myself and can't figure another workaround. I had found that using a direct link to the R932\V31site then going from there to the R824/V31site would get me in (see this thread) but apparently Microsoft has updated the site again since I now see R945 in the status field briefly before getting the "Thank You" brush-off page. Trying a new link I made to the R945 site first doesn't help.

I guess it doesn't matter too much in my case since Microsoft apparently isn't offering new updates for Win95 users on the Windows Update site but, as mentioned on the other thread, I have alternatives.
