I've installed a 2nd HDD (Seagate 30Gb) for an elderly widow.
It's recognised in the BIOS, but not by XP.
Original drive and new one both configured as cable select, and are correctly identified as master & slave. XP failed to recognise the drive at the next boot after installation. XP appears not to have fdisk, So I used a Win98 boot disk to create an extended partition & logical drive. Then formatted it as fat32.
Still no joy with XP recognition either through Windows Explorer, add new hardware, or Computer management/disk management.
System = HP Pavilion/XP Home, HTFS system, 128Mb SDRAM.
Existing HDD has 3+ Gb free space. I'm not to clued up about NTFS, but my understanding is that it can 'see' fat32 partitions, whereas fat32 can't see NTFS.
I s'pose that I could remove the drive & re-format in another computer as NTFS, but I'm not sure if that would solve the problem.
So, I'd be most grateful if someone could assist with a solution to this problem

regards to all, and seasonal greetings from 'Down Under'.

Formatting the drive as NTFS would have no effect.

It is actually the OS that "sees" partitions. XP can "see" both FAT and NTFS no matter which type of file system it is using at the time, so that can't be the issue.

Tweaking programs can hide drives from Explorer, but not from Disk Management.

You might try changing those jumpers. Instead of cable-select, set the system drive as master and the second as slave.

Once XP sees the drive in Disk Management, it can be formatted and partitioned from there.

Check to see that the Logical Disk manager service is set to automatic, and the Logical Disk Manager Administrative Service set to manual. Be sure the Plug-and-Play service is set to automatic as well.

These drives are on the same cable, correct?

Thanks for the rapid response Abraxis. I'll try your suggestions, asap. But this won't be until early next week. BTW, both drives are on the same cable/ide channel.

    Thanks again, cobber.

I had the same problem with a maxtor drive, it turned out the drive was bad, this may be your case. Download seagate utilitites to test the HD from the seagate web site. Also I would set the drives as master and slave. Good luck.

That's very true---the drive could be the problem. It seems that that is the case more often than it used to be.

Let's hope it's just some small, missed step.

    At last . . . .
Thanks for your helpful suggestions, fellas. It's taken some time to juggle free time between the two of us. But at last the problem's licked. The drive was OK. So as suggested, I reset thejumpeers from cable select to master & slave (I hope that no one's offended by this politically incorrect nomenclature). Et voila, problem solved. I didn't have to change any settings in Computer Management. But I have found through this excercise how to re-arrange drive letters which were (to my mind) out of proper order.
Thanks a million, I have really appreciated your help
    regards from 'Down Under'.

That's good news. Thanks for the followup.

Personally, I've never seen cable-select work properly, but it is there so it must work sometimes :)
