Why don't some desktop shortcut icons alphabetize properly?

I notice that certain desktop shortcut icons such as Norton System Works and Quicken don't alphabetize properly by the first letter (when Name is selected as the sort field) but instead are placed in the front section with things like Internet Explorer and Microsoft Outlook. Is there some way I can change this so they sort properly with all my other icons?

    thanks

The simplest way round your problem - to which I don't have a direct answer is to 'Arrange Icons by' > 'Align to Grid' and position the icons where you want them.

Then download and run a couple of files from the MS Windows NT 4.0 Resource Kit.

    Download Layout.zip here

When you right click on either My Computer or the Recycle Bin you have two new menu items - Save/Restore Desktop Icon Layout.

    robls99,
Are they the ones in a section of their own separated by a separator? If so, look in your Start Menu folder. Both yours and All Users. These shortcuts are put in the Start Menu folder/s and not in the Programs folder (which is a sub-folder of Start Menu.
If you move them into the Programs folder they would then be in the same group with the others. *if i'm not wrong*

Wow! Thank you both for the help.

lee: Your suggestion worked beautifully. I found the five errant icons in the All Users/Desktop folder where all my others were in the User/Desktop folder. After moving them it alpha perfectly. Who would have thunk it, even my IT guru didn't know how to ifx it.!

Now if I can only figure out how they got in there in the first place since I am only a one person user and don't use any other profile.

    Enjoy your weekend,

They're put there by the installation program. Some installations will ask if you want the program installed for all users. If you answer yes then it gets put there. If you aren't asked during installation, there's really not much you can do about it except check that folder after you install a program and then move things to where you want them. Things seem to me to be getting better in this repect however. I'm noticing more and more programs are giving the choice during installation.

Yea, the software put them there without asking us. But we can always find a way to move them around. Thanks for posting back.
