    Hi

    Dual boot XP pro and 98SE. I select F8>safe mode>Windows 98.
    98 boots to normal mode.

Have tried holding down F8 and the Shift key (Ctrl won't work)

I think I overcame this before once, but can't remember what I did:(

    Any tricks I am missing?

    Thanks
    Matt

    Try F5.

If that fails and you have a 9X boot disk, boot up and then start 98 by (assuming the OS is on C:)
c:\windows\win /d:m (or maybe windows\system32\win - been a while and I'm not sure of the exact location). /d:m forces a safe mode start for win9x.

Alternatives to entering safemode other than using the can't or F8 key:

    >From with in win98 try a restart in dosmode
    >type cd\ and hit enter to clear the dosprompt
    >type WIN /D:M and hit enter
^this is the safemode switch for win.com

    OR

    >From windows 98 and on the startbutton run line>type msconfig
    >click on the [general tab]
    >select the advance button
    >put a tick in the option: "enable startup menu "
    >Reboot and you should find yourself at the startup menu that will allow a safemode option.

    OR

I think tweakui has an option on one of the tabs that will change startup to go/show the bootmenu options. I just don't remember which tab. I'm on xp at the moment and tweakui is different version/animal.

NOTE Newt's suggested method and the repeated #1 option of mine does have the advantage of safemode CDrom support if autoexec.bat and config are properly setup. Just a little F.Y.I. in case an occasion should arise were this would come in handy.

    Much appreciated guys:)

Newt's method got me there with a few blue screens (Vfat error) and a reset button.

Goddez's method 1 works well with Ctrl/Alt/Delete (hope that's part of the process) from a flashing cursor.

    :) saved me hours.

Cntrl\alt\del ??? Flashing cursor??? It's not suppose to happen that way. I think this was a fluke and something happened that allowed a warm reboot [cntrl\alt\del] to put you back into windows in Safemode.

Perhaps it was the detected failed startup, additionally, maybe you didn't wait at the flashing cursor long enough. It may take windows a little time to sort the "To-dos" when starting up in safemode.

I hope you were able to cure what ever ailed win98 while in safemode. :D
