I can do this pretty easy in Linux by adding a few lines to the kernel but I need a little help in Windows (probaly the first to ever say that). I am looking for an IO trace for any version of Windows. I don't mean a tool that shows a bar graph of throughput and disk usage. I need a tool to trace the following:

    -time in ms
    -file name:
    -read or write:
-amount in kb read or written:
-buffer read or written (this isn't that important):

Its for a good cause. Its for a reserach project looking at power saving techniques in lap tops. Any advice would be appreciated. I don't mind writing something either if someone could point me to a useful interface in Windows I could collect this information from.

    Thanks in advance,
    Jonathan Strickland

    A very interesting question.

This little utility will give you nearly all you ask---except perhaps the thing you want most, the file name.

    DiskMon

Maybe some combination of these will get you what you want.

    NTFILMON
    Regmon
    NTProcessMon

    Thanks Abraxas

I don't think file names will be of interest right now. Its just too much information to analyze right now and not very relavant at this point. Im looking too much into the future.

Hopefully, that will get you a bit closer to your goal. Thanks for the response.
