My wife has MP3 files of several speeches over 80 minute. I want to split these so I can put them on 2 or more CDs which she can then play in her car. Is anyone aware of a program. Preferably free, which will allow me to do this?

The best I have found (does video of all sorts as well) is the splitter from www.boilsoft.com
It's not free, but a fully functional download is available.

Do a Google search for CHAINSAW FILE SPLITTER, it's free.

Also, you can use a regular line ripper. It is an MP3. A bit tedious. But it works.

:p appreciate the input but don't think chainsaw will work I need the split file to be payable so that I can put each split file on an individual CD an play it in a MP3 compatible player.

Just how big is this mp3?
If it's too big to fit on one 80 min CDR, then it has to be HUGE!

;) The files are quite large. They are copies of speaches that have been recorded over the years. They are fairly important to my wife so I want to preserve them in this format.

The one I mentioned above will do what you want easily.
There are tons more, some not so good, some free...Google it.

You're saying that the files are over 750 megabytes each?

:D Found something that did the job for me, it is called MP3 Splitter ver 2.0. Not very sophisticated, but it did everything I needed. I located it here: http://www.softpedia.com/public/cat/11/1/4/11-1-4-36.shtml
Surprisingly I found it was the time the MP3 converted to, not the size that was my downfal before. Some fairly small files, 20 to 40 meg when converted to a audio CD went over 80 minutes and had to be split to get them on different CDs. Hope this info helps. The commercial program suggested by the way is great. I just am so cheap if I can do it free I will usually go that way. Thanks to all who offered help.

    Wait.
You didn't mention that you needed them converted to .wav (.cda).
I thought you were just burning data, not trying to make an audio CD.
You said above, "I need the split file to be payable so that I can put each split file on an individual CD an play it in a MP3 compatible player ".
This led me to assume that the car has an MP3 player.
If it does, then you've gone about this all wrong.
If the car only has a regular audio CD player, then you've got it right.

Sorry. I am new to the whole audio mystique. Unfortunatly the car has only a CD player. And I was not clear myself on how the conversion goes when an audio CD is generated from a MP3.

An audio CD, is simply a bunch of .wav files (which is why they're so big) copied to the CD in such a way, that the car player can recognize them.
The burning software you use does all the conversion work for you, end result is a cd you can use.
I'm glad you got them all saved though.
Now you have an idea why I was asking so many questions about file sizes ;)
