How do I disable Windows Messenger Service in Windows 98? I am told that doing so will eliminate pop-up messages.
    Thank you!

It will ONLY disable messages sent via Messenger.

Find the messenger folder and rename it...

98 has a program named Windows Messaging. It is a fax and email program. Not to be confused with Windows Messenger Service.
You can click here and get the Google Toolbar. It has a good popup stopper, no ad/spyware comes with it.

    Yes, I was wrong.

Messenger Service in Windows 98 can't be disabled.
Are you getting any po-ups like this:
That's the only pop-up connected to Messenger Service.
If you are on a single computer, make sure "File & Printer Sharing" is disabled, as described HERE
Other, then that, get a pop-up stopper, or switch to a browser with built-in pop-up stopper. I think, IE is the only one without a feature like that.
