For the last 2 days I've been having a problem with Norton AV. At boot I get a connect box and Norton doesn't/won't load until I go on line. If I cancel the connect I can't even get Norton to open using the icon or start menu. Instead I get a connect box. If I go on line it loads and opens but is still slow to respond. If I go off line and try to open it, using the icon, start menu or task bar, again I get the same connect box and it refuses to open until I do connect. If I just keep canceling the connect keeps popping up every 5 minutes or so until I connect.

I've run on line virus scans through housecalls, PC Pitstop and Norton and got a clean bill of health from all so I'm sure it isn't a virus.

I've tried searching their knowledgebase and found one that sounded kind of like what's happening so I followed the instructions up to and including uninstall/reinstall. It didn't help. I really don't want to pay them $30 so they can tell me they have programmed it to "phone home" to make sure it's a legal copy but it's beginning to look like that's what's happening!

I'm ready to trash Norton and go with ANYTHING that doesn't create this problem! Can anyone help?????

    Brenda,

What version are you using? Is it just Antivirus or is it SystemWorks? If I had to guess, I would think that the LiveUpdate feature is trying to automatically update itself. Have you tried disabling that feature? For my SystemWorks 2003, I click Norton SystemWorks icon --> Options --> Norton Antivirus --> on the left side, go to Internet --> Live Update. Once there, remove the "x" for Enable Automatic Live Update.

    Brenda,

Another possibility. I just ran across this solution for a similiar problem. The person says that this fixed his continued connection problem. He started having these problems after the last set of updates.

Let me know if either of my suggestions help.

    Norton

I received an email from worldstart.com this AM. This is a quote.

Special Alert For Norton AV Users:

Have you recently updated your Norton Anti-virus?

Have you noticed an odd slow down at certain times? Like when trying to launch MS Word, right-clicking icons, disk access, - that sort of thing? I know I did, so I went looking and discovered that Norton had an update that'll cause a computer to make like it's a 286.

OK, Norton is actually blaming VeriSign, due to slow server problems. Here's the whole scoop as quoted from Symantec:

    "Situation:

Symantec is currently investigating reported computer slow downs and instability. This issue appears to be related to VeriSign receiving an unusual number of requests by Windows-based clients to download a certificate revocation list (CRL) on January 7-8, 2004. This increase in traffic resulted in intermittent VeriSign CRL server availability. For security purposes, Symantec products routinely verify the integrity of system components and at times were unable to achieve the authentication they were seeking due to the unavailability of VeriSign's server -- therefore customers experienced delays and instabilities. Symantec and other vendors are cooperatively working with VeriSign to mitigate this situation "

Blah, Blah, Blah. Strange how this happens ONLY if you ran the update...

Oh well, even the best of 'em can have occasional problems. Until this is fixed, here's a temporary work around:

    1. Open up Internet Explorer, click the Tools menu, and then the Advanced tab on the resulting screen.

    2. Scroll down to the Security heading, then UNcheck the "Check for publisher's certificate revocation" checkbox.

Hit apply and your computer springs back to its old self.

    UNQUOTE

    Hope this helps.

I actually did this last night and sure enough everything is back to normal. Who knew?! At any rate I do think it would have happened even without the update because I used GoBack to revert to a state before the update and the same thing happened so...in this case I do believe I've trashed Norton wrongfully and to them I say "I'm sorry "! Thanks to all who helped!

I'm seeing posts such as this recently and it is from the last big update from NAV. That update was for more than virus definations - for Live Reg / Live Update.

I'm also fairly certain that those with Office Plugin enabled are the only one's experiencing these sysmptoms.

    Regards - Charles

This morning I decided to see what would happen if I enabled "Check for publisher's cert..." in IE tools>options>advanced>security. Just to see if VeriSign was on the ball or if the problem still existed.

After turning that option back on I rebooted and again got the connect box and Norton didn't load but I thought "hey, maybe it needs to download the new cert" so I let it go on line and after a lot of activity I disconnected and rebooted again, leaving "check for publisher's cert..." enabled. Low and behold when the boot was finished {quickly I might add} Norton had loaded with no problems and I got no demand to connect. Everything seems to be working again.

And yes, I do have office plugin enabled and have had all along.

Just thought I'd pass on the good news. Thanks again!
