I have a home lan set up with 2 PCs running Win98se and my work laptop running Win95. My network consists of a 10/100 NIC in each PC, Cat 5 cables, and a 10/100 hub.

The protocols installed on each machine are TCP/IP and NetBEUI. All machines have a fixed IP address. All is working but I was wondering if this is the optimal setup. Which protocols do you guys use and why.

I am currently in a broadband no fly zone rolleyes: at home but do have DSL access with my Win95 laptop when I take it to work.: Is NetBEUI a security risk on my laptop?

Which protocols to install would depend on your network requirements and personal preferences.

Our home office LAN has TCP/IP, IPX/SPX, NETBIOS over IPX and NetBEUI all installed. TCP/IP is used for the ICS (via Sygate), IPX/SPX is for gaming (well, it's there for that reason, never get to use it) and NETBeui is for internal communication.

Since NETBeui is a non-routable protocol (unlike TCP/IP), it shouldn't present any type of security risk.
