    Hi All,

I have acouple of users on a network that use W2k Pro
and we just did a service pack upgrade on them. The
problem we are having is that they can't connect to the
internet. They can log into the new w2k3 server get there
email from it. They can see it etc. But can't go out to
the internet. We have other W2k Pro machines with exact
same setup with no problem. Do you think the service pack
had anything to do with it? What should I look for on
this issue? What tools can I use to diagnose this issue?

    Thanks,
    JJBean

Workgroup, domain? If domain, AD or classic NT?

Exchange server running? If so, version?

    What SP?

Please create and post the following from one working PC and one non-working PC and identify which is which.

start~run~cmd followed by ipconfig /all > c:\config.txt and copy/paste the contents of config.txt here. Note that you will not see results to the screen since you are piping the output of ipconfig /all to the text file.

    Hi Newt,

I am running a new w2k3 server/Domain/AD. I had already checked the ipconfig on the clients not working and they are exactly like the ones that do work. It wasn't until we upgrade the service pack from w2k pro sp3 to sp4 that this problem kicked in.

I can only think that the service pack upgrade which was done over the network didn't go correctly. I noticed it was very slow on
doing the service pack upgrade and this is connected to lan by a switch.

They can access there email to the server and the gateway in ipconfig is correct that leads out to the router. :(

    Anything else to check for.

    Thanks,
    JJBean

I have seen this a couple of times and read about it quite a few more.

I'd back out the SP4, do start~run~sfc /scannow to clean up any residual problems and see if the systems are working again.

If so, get the SP onto a CD and run it that way. Should work better although I have a suspicion that some systems just don't like SP4. Not real sure why though. We have one server that simply will not operate if we apply SP4 to it. We have 70+ others that are fine. Go figure.

If simply backing out the SP and doing the system file check doesn't cure things, you may have to do a repair install of the OS and then bring things up to date with security patches.
