I have a Dell Latitude CPi D300XT and use Win98SE as an OS and I have it connected to a Dell C/Dock which has a bay for a removeable media in which I put my original CD-ROM, a TORiSAN CD-ROM CDR_U200 and I installed a HL-DT-ST- RW/DVD GCC-4240N in the bay on my laptop. In the Device manager in has a check in the DMA box for the HL-DT-ST- RW/DVD GCC-4240N but the box is not checked for the TORiSAN CD-ROM CDR_U200. My question is should it be checked for both? Both work OK but sometimes I have trouble copying directly for the CD-ROM and burning with the HL-DT-ST- RW/DVD GCC-4240N, as making a direct copy of a CD. I can copy the contents to the HD and then burn OK. I use Easy CD Creator 5 Basic which came with the HL-DT-ST- RW/DVD GCC-4240N, I did do the updates and it is version 5.3.5.1. They drives seem noisy when I am trying to copy direct. Also is there any new firmware for the drives, most of the time it burns at 4X.

    Thanks:confused:

Check DMA - transfers will be quicker. If that particular drive doesn't support DMA the check box will be cleared on reboot.

As for firmware the manufacturer's website is the place to look.

IMO the best way of copying CD's is via the HD - 'On the Fly' can lead to problems if the CD drive cannot read fast enough. I have also found that certain - not copy protected - CD's give an error when copied direct - the HD route circumnavigates these problems.

    PeteC,
Done as suggested and put check in DMA box and rebooted, my CD_ROM drive is now gon [the
CDR_U200] that was in the media bay of the docking station and a yellow ! on the Primary IDE controller [single fifo] says is either not working or not present Code 10. The other drive in the media bay of the laptop [HL-DT-ST- RW/DVD GCC-4240N] is still working ok. I have tried taking out the
TORiSAN CD-ROM and rebooting but the same problem. Any ideas?

Code 29 says that it cannot find an available IRQ. Did you change any IRQ's in the BIOS? IRQ Steering?
To free up an IRQ, and you are not using your Serial Ports, remove them in Device Manager, reboot and immediately go into the BIOS and disable the Serial Ports.
Code 10 says that there is no driver installed.
You may have to remove the Hard Disk Controllers and the Generic IDE Disk Type XX under Disk Drives in the Device Manager. After removal and reboot, go back into Device Manager and go into Hard Disk Controllers, then click on the PCI Bus Master Controller, click on Settings tab, then change the Dual IDE Settings to "Both IDE Channels enabled ", it may have "Default" there.
Check the Generic IDE Disk Type and see that it has DMA checked also.
Normally, when you check the DMA for an IDE device and reboot, and if DMA is not supported by that device, the checkbox is cleared as though you never checked it, with no other side affects.

    To all,
I got a fix by doing a reg. restore to the prior day. I will study the options but as now all is working as before and I have both CD drives. Thanks for everything.
