I recently installed XP Pro and I updated it, set my preferences, and put in the latest drivers so I could make an image and not have to go through this again. But when I went to updated my Audigy 2 software I received a message that I didn't have applicable software. Checking into it I found I did so I figured I would repair it and try again. So in Add and Remove Programs I tried just that and got an error message "Error number 0x80040201 An event was unable to invoke any of the subscribers ", setup will exit. And now I can't uninstall, repair, or modify this software. Even using the Installation CD is useless. Does anyone know a way around this error short of starting formating and starting over??

Thanks Pete; I tried that link the other day but when I tried to clean the registry as described I had no luck. I must be missing THE important registry entry. I did try and contact him though to see if he could give me more detail... in the mean time, I'm still looking for any further help. Oh Pete, I liked your description of experience and adopted it with my own twist. Say so if you mind.

Hi Zander; System restore has not been tried only because I thought I would see if there was another way. Being a fairly "Fresh" install I don't know the extent of reinstalling updates to XP and OfficeXP and what other ramifications there may be. Being on a dialup connection we are talking hours of updates which is why I am planning on creating a Restore CD; for screwups like this. It's an option when I'm sure there is no other way (that and XP is new to me) and even then after I try it, I will probably go the wipeout and reinstall way just to be sure I have an nice squeaky clean install to "C "drive to image. I'm almost at that point...

    Hello Mcblazer,

First rule with SR should be to make a manual restore point whenever any change to the system occurs such as the updates to the OS you describe - including software installs, create one before the install and in time, after the the install.

A good start on uderstanding SR - advantages and limitations - type System Restore into the Help and Support applet - lots of info on SR.

    Regards - Charles

Thanks Charles; This sounds somewhat like my Dentist when he told me I should floss every day. I didn't listen till my gums started receeding and teeth began to ache. I floss daily now! And it looks like I'll be creating new restore points each time I install!
