I have IE6 SP1 and XP Home Edition SP1 installed with all patches and updates.
Recently my dial up modem internet properties connection settings kept defaulting to 'never dial a connection' no matter what setting I selected prior to shutting down. I have contacted Microsoft and tried all of these remedies to no avail: 1. added a new connection and a new administrator account 2. run all virus/spyware/malware/adware programs 3. run XP in safe mode 4. tried system restore 5. searched the internet for these types of forums.
Interestingly if I start Outlook Express it automatically offers to dial up if I am not connected wheras IE assumes I am connected.
Any help would be very much appreciated.
    Dave

    Thanks,
I have tried to reinstall IE6 but despite following the registry edit directions etc, my system keeps telling me I have the latest version of IE6 installed.

    Cheers

With XP and IE repair, there are a couple ways to do it.

One way to repair Internet Explorer is to have sfc check the system files by clicking on the Start Menu, then Run, and type in:
    sfc /scannow

    Or

Go to the Run dialog box in XP and type or copy and paste this line of code into the entry field - rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Setup\SETUP.EXE" /g "C:\WINDOWS\IE Uninstall Log.Txt ".

    Thanks again.
Tried both your suggestions with no change.
Also was able to reinstall IE6 but alas no change also in the problem.
    Thanks

See if the information on this page, under the subheading, "My dialup settings keep changing from 'never dial' to 'always dial' or 'always dial' to 'never dial" (about halfway down the page) provides the fix.

    Thanks Miz,
To date I have run AdAware, InstallSpy, Spyware Blaster, SpyHunter, SpyBot Searcher, InstallSpy as well as a full Norton AntiVirus scan.
None of these scans have picked up anything that relates that fixes my problem.
I guess I will wait for the next Service Pack for Windows and IE and keep my fingers crossed.
    Thanks

Are the reference files to Spybot and Adaware up to date? - these are updated on a regular basis - generally every couple of weeks.

The one program not on your list is Cwshredder - wouldn't harm to run that too.

    Thanks PeteC,
I ran CWSHredder and it gave me a clean bill of health.
All reference files in AdAware and Spybot are up tp date
and I regularly run updates each time I log on for all my virus, adware, spyware and malware software.
    Cheers

    Success at last!!!!

After having a rethink about AdAware 6, I decided to visit the Lavasoft website and discovered that build versions prior to Build 181 were no longer supported, and the automatic update for my build (162) kept reporting that no updates were available, when in fact there were updates available. I manually downloaded the latest reference file (Jan 10, 2004) and did a full scan uncovering 33 instances of spyware and malware on my computer. When I deleted these my internet connection problem disappeared. I am not sure whether or not Alexa, CometCursor, Globalcs Dialer, GMSoft Dialer or RedHot Networks were responsible for hijacking my dial up settings.
Anyway thanks to everyone for the suggestions and help.
    Cheers
    Dave

If you didn't already, you should get the 181 build as well. Lots faster than older ones.
