    Can anyone give me an idea about what to do with IE 6 when it will not retain the address' in the address line that I use. It used to store a great deal and now it wont store anything except what I use dureing a session. I had some problems with a program and the tech. had me clean out all cookies and temp, and set security to medium. Nothing has worked right since. Im talking about the drop own address line at the top of the program. I also get the m/s e in a box preeceding the url in the address line.

    Tom F--IE Tools|Internet Options|General tab|History section. How many days is History set to keep "pages in History "? I bet it is at 0 or 1. Set the number of days to something higher.
    Also the Blue "e" to the left of the URL in the Address bar is normal unless the site has a Favicon, but that is another story. (You probably lost all your Favicons when you cleaned out your Temporary Internet Files. ) Let's clear up the History problem first.

    Cruise and peruse the above links and sublinks for a good foundation_based understanding of IE's tif.

    The address drop down history is an MRU list kept in the registry and is kept and retrieved from several sources. Many things can make or break this function. You can walk through the various checks and then pick and choose which ones your most comfortable doing. Most just find it easier and less time consuming clean_out/delete the whole shabang including that all important "index.dat" cause "you clear history till the cows come home but if index.dat or IE's TIF folders are corrupted your spitting into the wind ".

    =========
    While I am still a little foggy on exactly what your "desired expectation" of this function is and suspect it may have something to do with IE's "auto-complete" feature, perhaps after reading the material provided you may have a better understanding of this/these features and can, more accurately, discribe what is happening, what's not happening and what you want it to do.

    GODDEZ1----Don't know why, aint gonna ask----all I did was (after reading what was sent to me by you, which was very informative by the way, as with all you guys and dolls) go to tools and to internet options/general. I decided to drop the days to 0 and then reset them to 20, which I think may be the default. Did this twice and then hit apply. Would you believe this thing is doing it's job now? Dont know what I affected, or if it was just a glitch. Got fingers and toes crossed that it dont repeat. Also did as you said and went into internet options and looked at the files there, and when I say files, I mean all kinds of cookies text and url's visited. Man, what a mess of files. Do you think my action with the settings may have, by some strange means, straightened out the settings in registry???? Thanks again, hope it holds, if not I'll get back to you.:rolleyes:

    Hi Tom,

    I'm glad to hear your Address Bar dropdown [history] is functioning once again. It is quite possible that the "setting and resetting" plus the "manual opening of your History folder" gave win98 a kick in memory. This fix method works more often than you'd think. It is used for a lot of enables, disables and option settings. Windows just seems to get amnesia [most likely a missing registry key entry or value] and doing this does must add the needed pointers.

    On the flip side this is also another way of clearing history, perhaps you really need the Dos deletes. Thats something to consider when you need to do this again.

    Thanks for the update and your most welcome. :D
