Hi I have not been able to read files from a data cd created on another computer running windows xp. It does not even see the cd in the drive. I run xp myself and the other computer cannot read from any cd's I create. Does anyone know of a reason or solution?

Are you finalizing the CDs when you create them?

i'm not sure what you mean by finalizing. I am using a formatted cd and just copying data to it. I have no problem with other computers just this particular one.

Sorry, I thought you were making CDs. I didn't know that you were using formatted CDs

Your Comp will not read cds made on other computer. Other computer will not read cds made on your computer. Correct? First guess is something is wrong with the other computer's cd drive or software. Try a commercial cd in the other computer just to see what happens.

When you say "formatted" are you referring to using programs like "InCD" or similar programs used in conjunction with CDRW type drives. If yes.. computer must be running the same program which wrote it when they are reading a "formatted" disk. Also it would have to be a CDRW drive. If I remember correctly (I rarely use InCD), if InCD is loaded, it can not read a CD-R disk either. So could one of the 3 above situations be causing your problems?

I am not using anything other than windows xp to format the disks. The other computer reads its own disks just fine and can use disks with programs just fine. This is why I am having such a difficult time to discover whats wrong. It is only this computer (a), all others work just fine with mine(b). a computer is a newer computer than mine so I have downloaded all the service packs to see if it was something like that but no luck. a will not read disks from b either but only on the cd rom drive it will on the floppy, so it has to be something with the operation systems.

So it's probably not a hardware issue.

If it is burning data cds and reading them, the cds should be able to work on the other computer. I don't think XP is the problem, because if it were, the disks would not work in the original machine. Is the data on the disks dependent on other software to be used? (For example, problem computer has a program home computer does not, therefore home computer can't recognize the data?) Just thinking out loud... lucky for you there are better minds than mine on this BBS and someone will chime in soon (start chiming, people!)

Did this computer ever work properly, or is this a new problem? Is there any tech support available from the place you bought the computer from? You aren't mixing up a dvd drive and a cd drive, right?
