I've tried a few steps found on this bbs without success. The problem-trying to shut down the pc, it automatically reboots. The option in the system properties, advanced, startup and recovery system failure, automatically restart-did not work either. I'm currently trying to run windows update and will see the results after it's completion.

Does anyone know why windows xp home version will not turn off? Any suggestions at this time will be greatly appreciated.

    Hi again Mr. Newt.....

Thank you for the link, however, I performed every step of the instructions and the pc still reboots instead of powering down. I've also removed the on-board video and installed a brand-spanking-new Matrox AGP video card. It runs great. Also removed the Easy CD Creator and Roxio all over the system. (including the registry) Still pc does not want to go to sleep...power down. I changed the option for "automatically restart" just to get the following error number to follow up on, and to my amazement :D there are no numbers to be found on the web or in the book(s).

Confused? Yes I am.... :) Any further suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you......Suzette

Blue screen of death at power down says.....
    0x0000008e (0xc0000005, 0x805A29C3, 0xF7300A54, 0,00000000)

Did disable shadowing in the BIOS, but cannot find the "cache" to disable that too....

Does any of This fit your situation?

0x0000008e 0xc0000005 stop errors are almost always hardware related as in bad hardware, driver versions XP dislikes, or a variety of other and similar issues. The trick here will be finding out exactly what. It can be a long and very frustrating search and if the above link isn't it, you will really need to decide if you want standby to work badly enough to dig into the problem.

It sounds like you have already done quite a bit but unfortunately not run across the exact cause.

BTW - we will stay with this as long as you want to.

    Hi All!!

After weeks and weeks of researching the web, I came upon a couple or web sites that have become very useful for more than just this problem. The link below worked on the pc that would not shut down....:D :D

    http://www.aumha.org/win5/a/shtdwnxp.htm

Then to my amazement, I found more tips on this page. I hope someone else gets the results I did.

Thanks Suzette. Kind words are always welcome. :D :D

XtremeRunnerARS - start a new thread for yourself and put in details. Easier to help you that way.
