I recently re-formatted and re-installed XP Home on my Dell 8250 but while I am sure there was another sound card installed before (SoundMax?) I cannot get it recognised now. Only Intel Integrated Audio shows which I presume is an on-board "card ".

I have looked inside and there are 2 cards - the top one is an ATI card which I assume is the graphics card and below is another card with no discernable clues on it - only made in Taiwan etc.

The lower card also has a wire connection from one end to the motherboard(?) whereas the graphics card does not seem to have.

    Any help gratefully received.

Hi cmagee - Welcome to the Board :)

    A few comments .......

Intel Integrated Audio is the on board sound chip

    ATI is your video card

The second card could be a sound card - or it could be a modem - what connections are available on the back of the card? If there are 2/3 circular sockets outlined with a colour then a sound card is the most likely. If one or two phone sockets it is a modem. The connection to the motherboard suggests a voice modem, the wire connecting with the audio chip.

For a sound card to work it would be necessary for the on board sound chip to be disabled in BIOS and the drivers for the sound card to be loaded.

Have you looked in Device Manager? Any items with a yellow exclamation mark??

Download and run Aida32 and see what info it gives re. sound.

SoundMAx is part Intel sound card, you might need to install addition driver

Pete: cmagee didn't seem to be sure that the wire he mentioned was connected to the MOBO. I was thinking maybe it was the CDROM sound connection. He needs to check that wire and see where the other end goes.

So, if he has the speaker, mike and sound in colored (Probably green, pink, black) sockets on the back of the card, got to find drivers for it and disable on board sound or plug speakers into that. cmagee hasn't posted back on what he may have found in device manager.

Question: if Windows does not detect the card, will Aida?

Probably not - it was a long shot, but if it is a modem, maybe.

Thanks to you all for help. After further examination of innards and after reading through yours and other postings (which were not directly relevant I have solved the problem as follows.

Nothing showed in Device Manager apart from Intel Integrated Audio and this was all that was found by the downloaded utility.

Top card is graphics card. Second card is modem, which is obvious from the connection on the back!

When I found the SoundMax site I discovered that they make the onboard sound cards for Dell so the Intel Integreted Audio is the same as the SoundMax card as one of you said. I had been confused because in my Pc's previous existence both showed under Device Manager so I thought there must be 2 physical cards.

From another posting I found that the Soundmax drivers are not included on the Dell setup disks for re-installation. So I downloaded what I guessed to be the correct driver from SoundMax and now all seems to be well.
