I have used NS since it started, and stabilized on 4.7 since 6.0 seemed flaky. I really like NS, and installed 7.0 which I now have.

I receive a lot of big emails from people, and I previously archived the 'mail' folder in NS 4.7 in a separate directory. This would occur when the folder built to 40 - 70 Mb in size. I have about 6 folders separately archived.

However, I now cannot select the mail folder in the NS 7.0 'edit' -> 'preferences' -> 'location' as it won't read them.

I had no problem with 4.7, and until last month kept a copy on just to read archived messages - I could designate what folder to use and it worked fine.

I upgraded to WinXP and kept NS 7 (as well as having to use outlook for mail now)

How can I view my archived email by message? Remember they are in several folders, and each may or may not have the same mail message folder name, i.e. 'johndoe' - so I don't want to overwrite any, just look at the messages individually. 7.0 won't import just a file, it apparently looks for NS 4.7 as a program. And I don't want to overwrite any as I import anyway since they are different folders.

As a last resort I can reload 4.7 and do it that way. Maybe you have an easier way to tell 7.0 to look at a 4.7 mail folder?

    TIA for any suggestions

    Welcome to the Forum, stratplan!

    Hi stratplan,

If you have archived 4.7 Mail in folders on your HD, you can copy the files, without the SNM extension, to your Netscape 7.0 Mail.

If you wish to view the 4.7 Inbox file
Rename the 4.7 Inbox file to 47Inbox, or Oldinbox
Renaming the files will prevent existing 7.0 Mail files from being overwritten.
Copy the file to your default Netscape 7.0 Mail Account Folder.

You can also Archive your Mail to CD, then create a "Dummy" account in Netscape 7.0, which you can then use to view your Archived Mail. You can send mail from the "Dummy" account, but not receive mail.
I have a guideline laid out here:
Archiving and Accessing Netscape/Mozilla Mail on CD

Post back with any further questions.

    Thanks for the help:

It pointed me to the right direction:

I have in my archived files, the following tree structure:

    Inbox.sbd (folder)
    drafts (file)
    drafts.snm (file)
...and a bunch more files like above.

In the Inbox.sbd folder, I have:
    clients.sbd (folder)
    ebay.sbd (folder)
    genealogy.sbd (folder)
    pagezone (file)
    pagezone.snm (file)
...and a bunch more files like above.

Using your help, I made a new account in NS 7.0, and then, with the help of some of your FAQs, found that the NEW NS 7.0 mail is in a screwy place that is much harder to find than the old 'look in the program files for NS, then user, then mail folder'

When I changed the local directory to:
    C:\Documents and Settings\****\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\default\x899k3wc.slt\Mail\mail0208.somewhere.com\Inbox

Nothing like making it hard, huh?

and took off the .sbd suffix on the old folder, I got most of the mail messages from the 2002 August archive in a readable format. Trying to read 40 Megs of a continous text file is not good.

Thanks for the help. I'll keep working and by setting up accounts for the archived folders I think I can recover nearly all of the messages. I still don't have the basic 'inbox' messages, tho -

    Thanks again.

    stratplan,

I don't believe you will want to remove the .sbd extension from the folder. When you copy an .sbd folder, you must also copy the "parent" or "companion" file. E.G.:
If you copy Inbox.sbd, you must also copy "Inbox ", the file with NO .snm extension.

If you didn't copy both files:
    Inbox
    Inbox.sbd
then that is why you don't have all your Inbox files.

Yes, the new Profiles folder location is a bit hard to find, but it's placed there for security purposes. The Profile data is stored in this randomly named, or "salted" directory to make it difficult for malicious programs to find profile data.

Glad to hear that you're making progress. Let us know when or if we can be of further help.

    Ramona :D
